I have zero confidence in the Justice Department’s investigation into the Chicago PD. This is all for show, they have to respond because of the very public corruption, deception, lies and murder of the Chicago PD that is being exposed right now.
Chicago PD has BEEN corrupt, it is part of the reputation of these corrupt police that commit crimes and get away with them, it is their “notoriety.” This is not breaking news. If the DOJ does by some miracle file a charge, like the premise of the performance it would be in the form of the Ferguson Report that while exposing so much corruption did nothing legislatively to respond to it. It merely made, suggestions. As the DOJ stated “Our primary audience for this report is the people of the St. Louis region, with that in mind, we have written this report to speak to an audience of average citizens— not lawyers, legislators, academics, politicians, or policy wonks. In addition, while this report includes many specific policy calls to action, it is NOT an implementation plan.”
And there is more recent precedence. In the DOJ’s refusal to file charges against George Zimmerman, Attorney General Eric Holder stated:
The death of Trayvon Martin was a devastating tragedy. It shook an entire community, drew the attention of millions across the nation, and sparked a painful but necessary dialogue throughout the country. Though a comprehensive investigation found that the high standard for a federal hate crime prosecution cannot be met under the circumstances here, this young man’s premature death necessitates that we continue the dialogue and be unafraid of confronting the issues and tensions his passing brought to the surface. We, as a nation, must take concrete steps to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future” but like the Ferguson report, there has been no implementation.
If it were not through the actions of Black activists groups like Black Lives Matter started by three Black women and that of Bree Newsome, again a black woman who boldly climbed the flag pole in front of the South Carolina State Capital to remove the Confederate Flag and the work of so many unseen and unknown others, the microscope on these crimes that had been perpetuated unseen except by those who experience it would continue unseen, it would be business as usual where pseudo democracy is dependent on the suffering of a silent unseen majority. George Orwell couldn’t have written this better.
The legal response that “the high standard for a federal hate crime prosecution cannot be met under the circumstances here” functions in the same way that Stand Your Ground did for George Zimmerman for its roots are inherently anti-black and anti-black life. The concrete steps Holder spoke of are quicksand facades posing as justice, equality and freedom for all. The struggle is between the maintenance of illusion and the bricklayers of “truth, justice and liberty for all” and this is predicated on an intersectional Black Liberation. This is taking place in the form of Black Lives Matter and Black activism writ large from the student protests on college campuses across the country or the activism in Ferguson both seeking to dismantle that which is killing black people and confers so much power and privilege to White America.
