What Is the Old Testament Good For–Doctrinally?

What Is the Old Testament Good For–Doctrinally? March 11, 2015

I was recently asked by a student whether there are any important Christian doctrines, beliefs all Christians should embrace and confess, that can be found and supported ONLY in and by the Old Testament.

He was not asking about nuggets of spiritual wisdom, inspiring verses, historical events, etc. He was asking me whether there are doctrines to be believed and confessed by all Christians that cannot be found only in and supported by the New Testament but that we must establish from the Old Testament alone.

Again–lest anyone misunderstand the issue–the question is NOT whether the Old Testament is sacred Scripture or whether it contains much wisdom and ethical instruction. The issue is ONLY one of Christian doctrines.

To put it another way, IF the Old Testament were unknown to a Christian group (perhaps a newly converted tribe whose only Bible is the New Testament), would any essential or important Christian truth, doctrine, be impossible for them to know and believe?

What say you all?
