We live in a fallen world, and here’s evidence #35,608.
Damian Holbrook is a writer for TV Guide. I’ve met him a handful of times because he covers The Bachelor. He’s one of those guys that everyone likes because he’s really funny and overly nice. Recently, one of Damian’s tweets was featured in a Samsung commercial that aired during the football games Sunday. His tweet basically said that Apple is imitating Samsung with their new big screens.
Harmless right?
Well the amount of hateful tweets he received yesterday is amazing. So many people are bashing a guy for tweeting about… a phone.
I know, ridiculous.
They told him to “f–k off,” described him as a “f–king loser,” told him he didn’t have friends, called him a “piece of sh-t,” and even said he looked like a “rapist who lives in his mom’s basement.” My favorite was: “u f-ckin cracka -ss samsung b-tch best be stop talkin sh-t.” I’m not sure what that means, but I’m amazed by the sheer variety of insults Damian got… over a tweet… about a phone…
When I first saw these tweets, they infuriated me. Damian doesn’t deserve that. No one does for any reason, much less for an opinion on a phone.
But now I’m just sad that there are people out there who take the time to write such things. How unhappy must their lives be? What kind of hurt have they experienced in their lives that would make them feel like they need to heave this disgusting filth onto someone they don’t even know? These are broken people and it’s just more proof that we live in a broken world.
I don’t know how to fight back against the incivility. Maybe follow Damien on Twitter, vow to think twice before contributing to the hate that exists on the internet, and pray that God is evident…
Yes, even in our social media feeds.
