Guillemette of Ornolac’s doubt about the existence of the soul lands her in the Inquisitor’s chair.
A neighbor describes her saying, “The soul? You idiot! The soul is nothing more than blood.” When she cuts off the head of a goose, the goose lives until the blood is gone. So she reasons that what we call “soul” – the essence of life – is nothing more than blood.
When the Bishop asks, “Did someone teach this to you?”, Guillemette says something wonderful: “No. I thought it over and believed it by myself.”
