“Dolphin Tale 2” continues the story of the 2011 film “Dolphin Tale” about an injured dolphin named Winter. The female bottle nose dolphin was caught in a lobster trap off the coast of Florida and part of her tale had to be amputated. Dr. Mc Carthy (Morgan Freeman), who made prosthetics for wounded soldiers, created a new tale for Winter.
Sawyer (Nathan Gamble) works at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium along with the director, Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick, Jr.) and his daughter, Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff). They have been with Winter since the beginning. Now, the older female dolphin who has been Winter’s companion dies and Winter goes into a depression. Added to this, the federal government says it is against the law for a dolphin to be alone and the aquarium needs to find a companion dolphin or lose Winter – the biggest attraction for visitors. It is their patronage that pays the bills.
The mission of the aquarium is not entertainment – it is to rescue, rehabilitate and release animals back into the wild. Dr. Clay is under a lot of pressure but he refuses to even consider capturing a healthy animal just to make the funders of the aquarium happy. Meanwhile, Sawyer gets an invitation to spend a semester on an ocean going research vessel but he does not want to leave his family – and Winter.
What everyone needs is – hope. And their hope will be rewarded in this family-friendly film that certainly affirms our responsibility to one another and to creation.
This is a very predictable film, and the acting is only okay. But the inspiration level is very high, especially when children with handicaps and wounded warriors visit the aquarium to see if Winter will accept a new prosthetic tale or not. Keep an eye out for that crafty seagull, too.
