A friend told me about this website sometime ago, but today’s Calendar section in the LATimes did me the favor of writing about it: Relief for moviegoers: the plot thickens as the bladder is hitting overlaod? RunPee.com can help – AP The website tells visually, via a timeline, the best time to take a bathroom break(s) during a film. You can sign up for a weekly email or follow it on Tweeter; you can download an App for your iPhone. For story-mongers,... Read more

Kayla’s Grandma Carolyn emailed Sr. Frances again to ask for prayers for Kayla tonight on “So You Think You Can Dance” (Fox).  True, it looks like we are “praying” favorites, but because the Sisters met Grandma Carolyn and Kayla, well, now we are friends…. (We pray for all, but maybe one or two extra for Kayla…) Hi Sr Frances,  How R U?  This is Kayla’s Grandma again….   Kayla enjoyed meeting all of you and is just honored to have such... Read more

Here’s a link to a book that sounds innovative and unique to chemistry classes. Sounds like an “explosive” idea to me … using film clips in chemistry class! Love it. An idea for teaching method transfer…. (The link for this review was posted on the MediaEducation listserv.) ReAction! Chemistry in the Movies by Mark Griep and Marjorie Mikasen Read more

I am often asked about graduate programs in media, media literacy, culture, and religion. Here are some programs that I am aware of. This is not an endoresement – except for the Unviersity of London’s Institute of Education where I received my MA in Education in Media Studies in 1995. The program does not have a theological component, however. I went there for the media (literacy) education focus and though challenging, I loved the program and the school (faculty and... Read more

A funny thing happened on the way to LAX last Friday. I will admit to never having seen “Fitzcarraldo”. But I was thoroughly rivited by the NPR interview with the film’s director-dreamer Werner Herzog  that I listened to on the way to the airport to collect Frank Frost who was arriving for the National Film Retreat: NPR: Werner Herzog Reveals Intense Private Journals (You can listen to it, which I recommend, or download a transcript). The New York Times reviewed CONQUEST OF THE USELESS:... Read more

The new online Journal of Media Literacy Education was launched at the National Association for Media Literacy Education Conference in Detroit yesterday. Here is a description of the journal – and I recommend it to all those who seek to engage in our media culture in meaningful ways (I am on the editorial board so I admit to being favorable to the journal!): The Journal of Media Literacy Education is an online interdisciplinary journal that supports the development of research, scholarship and... Read more

This entry is for fans of the Dude and the Coen Brothers.  Take a look at this article in today’s The Los Angeles Times “The Achievers”. It’s about a documentary about the cult status of a film that was a box office failure. The first time I saw this film about nihilism with a sound track of bad language I was not well impressed. The second time I saw it, in view of  editing essays for a film festival, I laughed... Read more

A couple of Sundays ago some of the sisters took the Universal Studio tour. Afterwards they stopped for supper at the Hard Rock Cafe on City Walk. Sr. Frances recognized Carolyn, Kayla Radomski’s grandma who was there with her husband and, of course, Kayla and some friends. They got to chatting and the nuns promised prayers for Kayla. Yesterday, Sr. Frances received an email from Carolyn, again asking for prayers. So, we invite your prayers that Kayla will advance (she is... Read more

Students from Chicago, Philadelphia, Delaware, Singapore, Dallas, Rome, Orange County enjoyed the 2 1/2 walking tour of Sony Studios right down the street from the PCMS. It was an excellent, intense, and full week. But I think I can say that a good time was had by all…. and we all learned so much. Blessings to all those who made this week possible for us! Read more
