Here is my article (review cum commentary) in this week’s National Catholic Reporter: Angels & Demons: Everyone’s trying to save the Catholic Church and Is Hollywood anti-Catholic? Is the Catholic Church anti-Hollywood? Read more

Last night Simon said that if Adam Lambert didn’t make it to the finals it would be the biggest upset in Idol history. That would be wrong, Simon. The biggest upset, in my opinion, was when Chris Daughtry was eliminated in Season 5, 2006. As I have said before, rock (post-grunge?) is not my preferred genre, but Daughtry was and is amazing. And look where he has gone; according to Wikipedia (that bastion of accurate information), his self-titled album... Read more

This is an interesting entry to AMERICA’s blog  (AMERICA Magazine) In All things: Angels & Demons and the L’Osservatore.  This is not a review of the film but a useful commentary, I think. The L’Osservatore Romano is the Vatican’s newspaper, or more properly, the semi-official newspaper of the Holy See. I have also heard it called the pope’s newspaper. The posting is eliciting many responses and I assume that none have yet seen the film (I don’t think the blogger has either). (I have seen... Read more

As you may recall reading in an earlier post, Holy Spirit Parish in Fremont, CA (Diocese of Oakland) has a 135-seat theater (see Holy Spirit Parish Fremont, CA). Deacon Bill Drobik attended a press screening for Star Trek a few days ago and sent me his review. He has graciously given me permission to post it.: Jimmy Olson (aka Deacon Bill Drobik), your Cub Reporter, had these thoughts from the screening: I’m old enough to remember the TV series Star... Read more

How Personality Can Predict Media Usage Mindset Study Finds That Certain Characteristics May Provide More Info Than Standard Demographics By Beth Snyder Bulik Click here for the article: HOW PERESONALITY CAN PREDICT MEDIA USAGE From Sr Rose: A colleague sent me this link today. It is an interesting theory. Now these companies will be sending us marketing versions of the Myers-Briggs or S.W.O.T. or even the enneagram, or develop a new personality test that will help marketers get our attention.  Knowing... Read more

What an outstanding film. As you can see, this poster was issued for the planned release for last year, but the film just opened in the USA on Friday. Great poster, though. This is a movie about humanity, heart, friendship, art, grace, goodness, against the backdrop of acute homelessness in a city and country where you would think we would care more for one another. Robert Downey, jr. plays Steve Lopez, a columnist for the LA Times, who encounters Nathaniel... Read more

Someone posted this blog link on Twitter and it made me smile… as did the response from an Australian who lampoons baseball and prefers the spiritual dimensions of cricket. And tonight two of the nuns are going to the Dodgers-Padres game here in L.A. (Who do I root for? I live in L.A. now, but I am from San Diego….) Well, may the best team win! Enjoy! This prequel to the X-Men trilogy of films is quite a good watch. It runs just under two hours and though very violent, there is no blood (and therefore has a PG-13 rating). It is directed by the Oscar-winning director Gavin Hood (Tsotsi and Rendition). This poster is for the release in France, I think – but I liked it more than the others. The story is interesting from several perspectives, not least of which is Jimmy Logan’s (Hugh Jackman)... Read more
