Here’s a good idea! If you will be attending the National Catholic Education Association conference this week at the convention center in Anaheim, first visit the booth of the Daughters of St. Paul/Pauline Books & Media (booth #634) where I will be signing books (as will Sr. Armanda Santos who has a beautiful new book out on st. Paul and Art). You may also want to attend one of my workshops: Tuesday, April 14 Cinema Divina: shared Praxis and Prayer... Read more

In all the situations of life the “will of God” comes to us not merely as an external dictate of impersonal law but above all as an interior invitation of personal love. Too often the conventional conception of “God’s will” as a sphinx-like and arbitrary force bearing down upon us with implacable hostility, leads men to lose faith in a God they cannot find it possible to love. Such a view of the divine will drives human weakness to despair... Read more

This lovely, lyrical Iranian film by Magid Magidi (director of the 1998 Oscar nominated film Children of Heaven, 1997) opens today in limited markets. It is the story of a husband and father, Karim (Mohammad Amir Naji), who loses his job at an ostrich farm in rural Iran (he is infairly blamed when an ostrich escapes). When he goes to the city to get his daughter’s hearing aid repaired, a man hops on the back of his motorcycle and asks to... Read more

After last night’s elimination of Scott MacIntyre, I am ready to predict who will be the final two contestants. Adam Lambert is the most original and versatile of all the contestants, and as Randy said about Allison, she can “sing her face off!” This does not mean I don’t like the other finalists still “alive” in the competition or even some already voted off. As America decided last year between the two David’s – which one had the power to... Read more

I jsut came back from visiting the Diocese of Shreveport, LA where I presented two seminars: one on media mindfulness to parents and teachers at St. John Berchman’s cathedral and another on the influence of digital culture on faith formation on the diocesan level. What a lovely diocese. it was an inspiration to meet, as I so often experience, people who are truly invested in their faith and ministries. It was an inspiration! And not without its funny moments! Here are two... Read more

All I can say about Adam Lambert’s rendition of “Ring of Fire” is that it should be written into the sequel for “Twilight”: “New Moon”. This is such an original interpretation of one of Johnny Cash’s trademark songs. Very … Goth! Do I think Adam Lambert will win American Idol this year? Yes, if he keeps going the way he is. I think there are five outstanding artists in the final “ten”, but my vote goes for Lambert. <a href=”http://”> Read more

David Cook’s performance last night on American Idol was amazing – just to prove that I was right (along with millions of others) that he deserved to win last year’s competition. “Come Back to Me”  is probably one of the most meaningful love songs I have ever heard: the transcendent, complete, all there, nothing lacking, unconditional, meaning of love. (This is from YouTube rather than the performance. For the performance, click here: American Idol: Come Back to Me) I wonder what it... Read more

In 1995 I made my annual retreat (silent/directed) at  Craighead Retreat House neat Glasgow, Scotland. I had taken my final exams and turned in my dissertation for an MA in Education in Media Studies at the University of London’s Institute of Education and was awaiting the results before returning to the USA. One day I found a green pamphlet at the retreat house from the series of Jesuit writings published by The Institute for Jesuit Studies in St. Louis:  To... Read more
