In other news, I just picked up a copy of The Hiding Place, the memoir of Holocaust survivor and Righteous Gentile Corrie ten Boom (co-written with Elizabeth and John Sherrill). I read this book as a kid because I was encouraged to do so by my white fundamentalist church and private Christian school. It’s a powerful story.
I learned a lot from this book — and from the Billy Graham Films movie adaptation and even from the Spire Comics version of it. But now I wonder if what I learned from it is what my white evangelical elders intended me to learn.
I mean, there were a lot of books those folks revered and encouraged me to read that I’m not sure they fully understood. Like Prince Caspian or Mere Christianity or Dickens or Isaiah or Amos or Luke or Acts or …
Anyway, I’m going to be re-reading this and maybe posting through it a bit to see what it may have to teach us — and them — today.
