Consider this an experiment and an invitation for feedback. The three-column layout gives a bit more flexibility with sidebars, does it work? Is it user-friendly? Ugly? Your take on this matters more than mine does. (Update: Tweaked this a bit so the center column is a fluid width.) * * * * * * * * * I've heard several people refer to Fred Thompson's likely late entry into the race for the Republican presidential nomination as an attempt to... Left Behind, pp. 283-288 It's now early Tuesday morning and Buck Williams is headed to the Plaza Hotel for a late night interview with Nicolae Carpathia. We still don't know why Buck wants to interview the Romanian president. He's determined to ask Nicolae for protection from the international conspiracy — so determined that he hasn't eaten or slept in more than 24 hours. One assumes, though, that this part of the conversation would be separate from the interview he hopes... Read more

I'm disappointed with Kathy Ireland (not that I know her personally, but like many American males my age, I remember her fondly from a series of Sports Illustrated photo shoots that coincided with my teenage years). But my remnant of respect for her — that which survived after seeing Necessary Roughness — is being sorely tested by her renting out her credibility on behalf of Rent-A-Center. Rent-to-own stores allow consumers to mortgage not only their home, but also their appliances... Read more
Faithfully Liberal posted an interview with Eboo Patel, founder of the Interfaith Youth Core. I hadn't heard of either Patel or his group before, so the interview provided a good introduction. I particularly liked this distinction, from Patel. The "faith line," he says: … does not separate Muslims from Christians, or Jews from Hindus, but rather religious totalitarians from pluralists. A religious totalitarian is someone who seeks to suffocate those who are different from them. … A pluralist is someone... Read more
Kristof's comments on empowering women, and Whedon's rant, and the ensuing comments on both reminded me of this: Back in 1991, I heard Dr. Muhammad Yunus of the Grameen Bank speak at a conference in Silver Springs, Md. I spent much of that conference hanging out with the folks from the Good Faith Fund, a community development loan fund in Arkansas* that was one of the first groups to try to emulate Yunus' microlending approach in an American setting. We... Read more

Last summer, when the Phillies were in the thick of the NL Wild Card hunt, their ace pitcher, Brett Myers, had to miss several starts for court appearances after he allegedly beat up his wife. The Onion's take on this story was horribly close to how it actually played out: "Brett Myers Atones for Punching Wife With Solid Seven-Inning Outing." This summer, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports, that headline could read "Elijah Dukes Atones for Threatening to Kill Ex-Wife... Read more
