Preparing Your Kids for School

For Kindergartners
Starting school for the very first time can be hard on our youngest scholars. Whether or not, your child has gone to preschool, kindergarten marks a brand new beginning. Elisabeth Stitt with Joyful Parenting Coaching, recommended practicing a morning routine. “Have them get dressed, have breakfast, pack a snack, and leave on time. Drive to school and spend some time walking the campus, playing on the playground and visiting any staff who are on campus.”

For Kids Transitioning to a New School
If your child is starting a new school, whether because of a new address or moving up to a higher grade, take advantage of back-to-school events, especially for middle or high schoolers. Most middle or high schools schedule time the week ahead of school for students to find their lockers and classrooms ahead of the first day.
“Have students walk the campus and learn its layout,” Stitt said. “Where is the library? The computer lab? The multi-use building? Talk to staff. If possible volunteer, to help staff with Getting Ready for School tasks.”

If your student isn’t able to physically walk the campus, many schools have online maps that can be downloaded and studied prior to day one.
