Preparing Your Kids for School

For Elementary School Students

Some experts suggested helping kids get back into the swing of school by “assigning” some homework. “As the summer winds down, why not try having your child read a few pages in a book, complete some math problems you find online, or write about their day in a journal at the exact time and the same location where they will be doing homework?” said Courtney S. Hillesheim, owner of Focused Parent. “This helps ease the shock of not having the whole day to themselves anymore.”

For teenagers, they can prepare mentally for the coming school year by acquainting themselves with the state exams they will be taking. “Knowing ahead of time what the state is looking for as standards of mastery will help them enter the school year prepared,” Hillesheim.

As Proverbs 14:8 says, “The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way.” Hillesheim continued, “Understanding what the school year will bring, helps young adults prepare for success. … How exciting it would be for your child to start school armed with the knowledge of what’s to come instead of being completely unaware!”

Whatever you do, remember that starting a new school year can be a daunting prospect for most kids, and allow them a few weeks to adjust to new routine and schedule and classes and teacher and friends. Also, give them grace, as they will likely come home tired, cranky and out of sorts in the beginning, especially the younger kids who aren’t used to all-day schooling. Finally, remind your children and teenagers that school will get easier as they settle into classes and teaching styles and homework. Help them to say no to activities or events when necessary and encourage them to have plenty of downtime throughout the week to give their busy brains a well-deserved rest.
