Envy. Like greed this is also contrary to everyday generosity. We see others, and we see them succeed, we hear them spoken well of, we see that they get the very things we want. We fall into envy when we step beyond simply being aware of this, but dwell on it, begin to resent, to look down on others (which is also pride- it seems hard to fall into one of these sins without jumping into the others as well) – at the worse we begin to plot how to hurt them or take away either what they have or their ability to enjoy. Maybe the easiest way to slide into envy without noticing is when we have suffered from injustice or abuse and then see the goods things enjoyed (or apparently enjoyed) by those who have hurt us and those who haven’t suffered the same ways we have. They enjoy the goods things we either want or ought to have or have had taken from us. I can’t say what to do with such thoughts, but I can say they will have less room in our hearts if we filled with. . .
