Stop what you’re doing for a moment, and gaze on some icons with me:
Just gaze. Don’t open another tab and do something else while you half- listen. Look with reverence at the faces of your brothers and sisters.
Every human is an icon. When you gaze attentively at your brother, you gaze at Christ. When you listen to their experience, you’re listening to a little gospel about the passion of the little Christ. That makes listening to humans testify about their experience a fundamentally sacred, prayerful practice.
The film called “Human: The Movie” is the most beautiful testimony to the human as an icon I’ve ever seen, and I recommend you watch the whole thing. But it’s over three hours long, so I’ve just posted a few clips here. Please watch the whole thing when you get the chance; it’s available in full on youtube. But it will probably take you a few sittings to get through, if you gaze as attentively as you should.
People are the loveliest icons.
