Carrie Fisher Has Died

My heart is broken.

People Magazine is reporting that Carrie Fisher just died of the heart attack she suffered earlier this week.

I don’t know anyone who dislikes Star Wars. In this house we love Star Wars– my daughter Rose chatters about Star Wars the way most girls her age chatter about ponies and Disney princesses. Rose is  clever, feisty and energetic girl, and it’s difficult to find clever, feisty and energetic girl role models that are real characters instead of annoying didactic tropes. Princess Leia was that character. Michael pointed out to her that Han Solo is annoyed with Leia throughout Star Wars: A New Hope because Leia is smarter than he is and he knows it; Rose thought that was hysterical.

I’ve come to admire Carrie Fisher for other reasons– I’m not saying that I know a lot about her, but hearing about her mental health struggles, her frank talk about aging and weight gain as an actress, did inspire my respect.

I don’t even know how to tell Rosie that she’s dead.
