One Last Request for the Summer

One Last Request for the Summer August 13, 2020

Hi guys, this is not a real blog post, this is just my monthly reminder that Steel Magnificat and my family run almost entirely on gratuities. I get a tiny paycheck from Patheos for clicks in the United States, which probably won’t even be a hundred dollars this month, and the rest of my living is tips from satisfied readers. Some people tip sign up to tip monthly at the same time like a Patreon, and some people just slip me a few bucks when they can, and I am flattered and grateful for both kids of tip. You keep the lights on around here and I keep writing things you like to read. Think of it as a magazine subscription where you pay what you think I’m worth and you get to keep reading even when you can’t afford to pay.

The latter half of August is turning into the trickiest time for us financially since the beginning of the pandemic lockdown in March. We’ve been steadily losing regular monthly tippers due to the country’s economic collapse. And the state of Ohio is going to resume utility shutoffs in September– terrible timing, as August is our highest electric bill of the year. I just poured the last of a gallon of milk and realized I’m not sure if I can buy more in the morning, and that hasn’t happened since winter. And this month’s groceries are a bit more expensive than last winter’s, since we’re trying to InstaCart groceries whenever we can instead of taking the bus to the store to limit our exposure to COVID but InstaCart has fees and a tip involved.

So, as always, I ask: if you like what you read, give me a tip when you can. Just go to our “donate” page here, click on the bright yellow button, and Paypal will walk you through the rest. The button says “donate” but it’s actually just a gratuity, not a charitable donation. I pay taxes on it if I make enough to tax.

Thank you very much for your continued patronage, and now back to blog posts worth reading!
