This one’s nuts. Truly. It’s just …insane. No two ways about it. No need to take my word for it, though. It’s currently streaming on NETFLIX INSTANT, which offers the following (hopelessly inadequate) description: When her grandson, Champion, is kidnapped while competing in the Tour de France, Madame Souza and her dog set out to save him. Along the way, they meet an eccentric female singing trio called “The Triplets of Belleville” who might be able to help. Sylvain Chomet,... Read more

I’ve written about contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo in the past, and I’m sure I will do so again, because his stuff is wonderful — some of it very classical in its flavor, some very cinematic, and some more jazzy-bluesy than anything else. In fact, the unpredictableness of the genres in which he works — though he never relinquishes a wonderfully strong melodic sense– is a major part of why I enjoy him so much, I think. He’s constantly surprising me.... Read more

I’ve been collecting quotes about art and artists for some time now, because a) I don’t understand art or artists at all, and b) I want to. So, here’s a little something on the topic from Andrei Tarkovsky, whose films deal very heavily with the question of art and the artist and their relationship to one another. (Andrei Rublev and Stalker, in particular, I think…) Yes, I realize that it’s long and dense — very much like Tarkovsky’s films, in... Read more

Stumbled across this image a few days back. Picked your chin back up off the ground yet? Take your time. I can wait. Those photographs come from Peter West Carey, and they’re spectacular. But I had no idea what I was looking at when I first saw them, other than knowing that it was Petra, and that they were gorgeous. Apparently, this “candle-lit Petra” is a bit of a thing, though. From the Visit Jordan website: To visit Petra during... Read more

Since I’m currently hanging out in the (surprisingly warm) Pacific Northwest, and since I’ve been fascinated by the idea of beekeepers ever since I first read Gene Stratton-Porter’s “The Keeper of the Bees” as a lad, this short on “Wolf Carr, a vocal coach living in Portland, Oregon who spends his free time as an apiarist running WolfHoney” seemed appropriate. (It’s part of a larger series from Portland-based PRist Juliet Zulu “profiling interesting Portlanders” — a phrase which instantly reminded me of... Read more

I’ll be honest. Whenever someone asks me for a list of thematically-appropriate movies for The Fourth, my affection for one particular film shoulders aside any and all candidates that might otherwise have come to mind. Is that fair? Probably not. But I don’t really care. Because while it’s been hard to find online at times, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is currently streaming on NETFLIX INSTANT. In Frank Capra’s classic, junior senator Jefferson Smith remains idealistic despite widespread corruption among his... Read more

“Where have the actors gone? The play has ended; the curtains drawn. There’s no applauding now, no cheering crowd; No autographs, no curtain calls; An empty stage, a silent hall.” Morten Lauridsen I suppose it’s not surprising that I jumped so eagerly at the question when Elizabeth first proposed it as a topic for our symposium on the upcoming synod. “Where have all the men gone, you ask? They’re not gone,” I quipped. “They’re in my house.” True, I jumped at... Read more

Taking a week or two to head to Washington to witness. I shall return anon. Content may be scanty during the next few days. If my mostly-magical WordPress “Scheduler” function works properly, however, you shall not be left postless. …though whether that is a good or a bad thing remains to be seen. Y’all behave, now, you hear? Attribution(s): “Cool Fishing Poster” provided by Shutterstock. Read more

Well, that went well. …and continues to go well, actually. Really, really well. But wait a second…fourteen years? Fourteen?? Time sure flies when you’re having fun. Attribution(s): One of my favorite shots from our wedding album. Read more

Gosh, this is gorgeous. From Cartoon Brew’s story this past Thursday: This morning at the Google I/O developer conference, Glen Keane debuted his new hand-drawn short, Duet, which he produced with Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group. The short is the third in Google’s series of Spotlight Stories that are designed to explore the possibilities of interactive animation on mobile devices. Glen “Marahute” Keane is a bit of a legend — a genuine Disney Legend™, in fact — and after watching this, it’s... Read more
