Trump Surrogate Inspires Meme-Moments From the Lowest Depths of the Internet

Trump Surrogate Inspires Meme-Moments From the Lowest Depths of the Internet 2018-06-21T23:12:04-04:00

If former President Barack Obama’s divisive, “Us vs. Them” rhetoric was insidiously wrapped in intellectual doublespeak, the raw, naked racism stirred up by the age of Trump is the backlash, and we’re all so much worse off for it.

And if there’s anyone who feels some impulse to defend Barack Obama in this moment, let’s just understand that you’re wrong. Full stop.

We have Trump because of the smug nastiness and epic ego of Obama. He was not the smooth, cool political tactician his proponents would like us to believe.

That being said, what we have now is just bad. Those things that were stirring and surviving in the sewers of our society now feel free to operate in the open, drawing strength from a president and his associates who not only embody every ugly stereotype the left ever conjured up about Republicans, but they seem to revel in it.

The latest episode of disgust involves the ongoing, tragic circumstances at the southern border, and the separation of illegal immigrant families.

Pictures of children behind fencing and secretly obtained audio of the anguished cries of frightened toddlers, who simply want their parents is absolutely devastating. From a political standpoint, Republicans can pretty well stop the charade of being the party of God and family. That ship has sailed.

As long as the ship is being captained by a raging, hay-haired, pathological liar, with a crew of miscreants and scumbags, it may never dock in saner harbor, again.

And speaking of miscreants and scumbags, let’s talk about former Trump campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski.

Lewandowski created a firestorm while appearing on Fox News Tuesday night, when he dismissed the concerns of guest Zac Petkanas, who was describing the plight of a 10 year old girl with Down’s Syndrome, who had been separated from her mom.

As Petkanas was speaking, Lewandowski interjected with “womp, womp,” a sound meant to make light of what was being said.

Things got heated, as Petkanas, in disbelief, called out Lewandowski’s callous attitude.

I don’t know why he was surprised, given Lewandowski’s past behavior.

During the run-up to the election, Lewandowski manhandled Breitbart reporter, Michelle Fields, as she approached Trump to ask a question, leaving bruises on Fields’ forearm.

If anyone thought the moment would just pass, think again.

The attitude created by this wretched cancer of Trumpism makes fertile ground for these moments to take root and grow.

In the bowels of the internet, Trump’s most rabid base have grabbed on to the “womp, womp” attitude and are turning it into meme moments.

“We all owe Corey Lewandowski a big thank you for creating the ‘Womp, Womp’ meme,” a user on Gab, a Twitter rival popular with white supremacists, wrote. “From now on, whenever you spot emotional manipulation, just respond: ‘Womp, womp.’”

Neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer called it “the womp heard round the world,” enthusing that Lewandowski, who didn’t respond to a request for comment, had ushered in “THE AGE OF THE WOMP!”

“We have been empowered by it,” the site continued.

“Womp, womp” is being joined with other terms, like “cuck” and “Deep State,” as part of the mindless repertoire of the MAGA online brigade. It serves no purpose, other than to annoy liberals (or conservatives that object to the damages of a Trump presidency).

On 4Chan, “womp womp” has become so popular that one user asked Thursday for posters to stop flooding the board with it.

“Please…stop womping before it’s too late,” the user wrote.

The first response to the plea: “womp womp.”

They can’t even give each other relief. It’s like being in a snake pit, where the snakes begin eating each other.

The bigger picture here is that there are whole communities that took what was an astoundingly hateful moment from a Trump surrogate, and saw it as a green light to further push their crazy into the mainstream.

It’s frightening. It’s disgusting. Something needs to change.

If the GOP doesn’t regain its soul and run a conservative, civilized primary challenger against Trump in 2020, they will lose.

What’s worse, our nation could lose (if it isn’t lost, already).
