Fox News Reporter Hides in the Bushes and Waits for Illegal Immigrants

Something about a Fox News reporter hiding in the bushes, waiting to jump out and grab illegal immigrants at the border seems just right for a Halloween in the time of Trumpism.

No, I’m not joking.

Yes, this is a thing that actually happened.

A Fox News correspondent actually took to the bushes along the border in McAllen, Texas. The goal was to catch illegals in the act of attempting to cross the border, and then to turn them back.

And yes, I cringed when I first heard of this.

“We’ve been hiding in the bushes waiting to witness one of these crossings,” Fox News reporter Griff Jenkins said during a “Fox & Friends” segment that aired on Tuesday.

“They’re coming right now,” Jenkins continued as he began to journey through the bushes to a river. “You can see they’ve got a family in a raft.”

Indeed, a man paddling a rubber raft, with what appeared to be at least six people aboard came into view.

As Jenkins called out, asking if they were attempting to cross the border illegally, the raft moved towards the opposite bank.

The man paddling then went to the other side of the river as the lettering on the Fox News broadcast began to read: “Griff Foils Illegals’ Attempt to Cross Border.”

This still strikes me as funny.

“So what we’re witnessing now is clearly a family that was being brought over by that smuggler that was paddling in the raft. This is an attempt to illegally cross, and they’ve gone back over there,” Jenkins said.

“We seem to have foiled this attempt, but officials tell us that he’s probably just going to look for another spot,” he added.

If that’s the case, then you’re going to be pretty busy running them all down, Griff.

He wasn’t anywhere close to done. There were others to chase.

Another clip from the segment featured the reporter walking along with a small group, speaking to a woman, her face obscured by a blurred screen, asking if they were an illegal group.

“Can you tell me, is it an illegal crossing? Yes? But you came anyway?” he asked.

“Well why did you come, is what I’m asking you. Can you tell me why you came illegally?” Jenkins asked an unknown woman.

And I have to add, the woman’s English was quite good, with only a vague trace of an accent.

No, I’m not insinuating anything. I’m just saying…

The woman responded: “The situation in Honduras. You cannot have work in there because the criminals will always get your money.”

This echoes the words of some of the members of the migrant caravan that is currently moving north from Honduras.

Violent gangs extort the citizens, making life untenable, so thousands have opted to make the arduous journey towards the United States.

The last estimate of the number was around 7,500 people, and a caravan that stretched a mile long.

The concern is that they will reach the southern border and overwhelm border patrol agents. For now, however, they’re still in southern Mexico, over 1,000 miles away, and mainly traveling on foot.

Will the full crowd make the journey? Will they turn back or fall away, as hunger, thirst, and exhaustion set in?

Will authorities in Mexico stop them?

There are a lot of variables, so while the concern is warranted and it’s a situation to keep an eye on, the real threat may lessen considerably, as time goes on.

Whatever happens, we can rest assured that Fox News Junior Border Patrol will be on the case.
