The Hot Takes on the Mailed Explosive Devices Are Horrible

The Hot Takes on the Mailed Explosive Devices Are Horrible October 24, 2018

Since I’m trying to cover all angles on the news of the day – the explosive devices sent to various liberal figures – let me catch everyone up on the sweltering fever swamp of bad takes.

First, an update to my previous story.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had announced during the day that his office had received a suspicious package, as well.

I don’t know if this was Cuomo attempting to be a part of the day’s events, or if he still did not know for sure, when he made the announcement, but the NYPD has given his office the all-clear.

“The earlier suspicious package at Governor Cuomo’s office in midtown has been cleared by NYPD personnel. It was unrelated. And there was no device of any kind,” said NYPD spokesperson J. Peter Donald in his tweet.

A package did arrive at Cuomo’s office, but it apparently it only contained a thumb drive with information on it that pertained to the Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group founded by Gavin McInnes. They were recently involved in an altercation with Antifa protesters in New York.

With that bit of housekeeping out of the way, let’s talk about the inevitable conspiracy theories.

In particular, the immediate response from the MAGA wing of the political realm is that this was a “false flag” situation, designed to invigorate and inspire the Democrat base, ahead of the midterm election.

That very theory was presented on Fox News by former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker, earlier Wednesday, even as law enforcement were still in the process of piecing the events of the day together.

“We’re already seeing a little bit of a pattern,” Swecker said on Fox News’ Outnumbered. “They’re going to be looking at this as a potential terrorist motive, whether it’s on one side or the other.”

“And as you correctly pointed out earlier, this doesn’t necessarily mean someone is espousing some sort of conservative ideology and targeting Democrats,” he continued. “It could be someone who is trying to get the Democratic vote out and incur sympathy.”

“That’s an interesting point,” co-host Melissa Francis said.

“And that’s why we always caution against that speculative…” Faulkner said. “They could be the same facts for different reasons as you’re pointing out.”

Yes. There could be some facts we’re not aware of, at this point in the investigation.

I’ll even go as far as to say it may be completely true. This all may be a cleverly devised leftist plot to show voters ahead of the midterms how dangerously unhinged the right has become.

I mean, let’s be fair. It wouldn’t be the first time leftists have orchestrated situations to create a narrative that suited their purpose.

That’s possible, and if the investigation shows that to be the case, I’ll rush to give the details in full, right here.

I’ll do it gladly.

I would actually welcome that.

My gut just isn’t buying it, however.

And the reaction from the MAGAsphere is pretty much disgusting. Every time something like this happens, they find a way to cast themselves in the most unflattering light.

Idiot.
