The Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood joined the RavenCast to discuss his book The Execution of God: Encountering the Death Penalty. Jeff has written 16 books and has appeared on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, NPR, and many other news outlets. He writes for the Patheos blog Engaging Radical Theology and his website You can listen to the MP3 or watch the video below.

Christians follow Jesus, a man who was executed on a cross by the political and religious authorities. Jesus went to the cross to show us God’s radical love. It’s a love that invites us into new life; a life that ends the practice of executing one another and begins the radical practice of universal love and forgiveness. Unfortunately, in the United States, political and religious authorities continue the archaic practice of execution. The tragic irony is that they often do so in the name of Jesus.

Jeff discussed the theological reasons to end the death penalty, the spiritual consequences of the death penalty, and how we can move into the future of God’s love and nonviolence.

The RavenCast is a product of the Raven Review, a non-profit organization, an online magazine where we write and talk about mimetic theory and the rivalry, violence, and scapegoating that often divides our communities. All interviews are published on the Raven Review and Teaching Nonviolent Atonement blog within days of being recorded.

Our motto at the Raven Review is, “Change your view, change the world.” So, if you’d like to hear new perspectives on religion, politics, pop-culture and current events, perspectives that bridges divides and brings people together, then please subscribe to the Raven Review. The Raven Review is also the force behind Patheos’s blog, Teaching Nonviolent Atonement, where we use mimetic theory’s wisdom to help build cultures of peace.
