Day 11: When are you eating your food? March 2, 2015

I do not have bananas growing in my backyard, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t have a banana today (or any other day) despite the fact that the banana would not normally be found in a place with 5 inches of snow on the ground.

Modern transportation allows us the luxury of having nearly any kind of food, at any time of year … and not just as a special treat, but regularly and consistently. But in response to such a wide variety of food choices, we must consider the ethical implications of eating foods that are not only out-of-season, but that are grown on an entirely different continent.

The text of Ecclesiastes 3 teaches that there is a rhythm to life, that all life has an ebb and flow. Though the seasonal shifts in some places may be more subtle than others, nonetheless, human beings respond to the shortening and lengthening of the days as much as the rest of creation.

Greater awareness of the cycles of nature and our bodies’ responses to them may lead to a greater appreciation of the beauty and flavor of foods at their peak – when they are in season – and my also help us begin to cut back on the out-of-season foods or foods that are grown out of our region.

In turn, cutting back on off-season and non-local foods reduces the amount of energy that is used in getting our food from the farm to the table.
