I like this chant , found at Dappled Things along with this meditation for Monday’s Vespers:
Today the Church’s Evensong salutes Christ as the Root of Jesse. The imagery is of the fresh growth that comes forth from the father of King David, a strong plant that will grow to be a sign not just for Israel, but for the Gentiles as well. Yesterday, the Lord was acclaimed as the God of the Old Testament; today we’re reminded that salvation, though from the Jews, is extended to the whole world through Jesus Christ, Himself a descendant of Jesse and David.
O Radix Jesse, qui stas in signum populorum, super quem continebunt reges os suum, quem gentes deprecabuntur; veni ad liberandum nos, jam noli tardare. O Root of Jesse, who standest as a sign for the peoples; before whom kings shall keep shut their mouth; whom the Nations shall beseech: come and deliver us, tarry no longer.
The principal influences on this antiphon are prophecies from the Book of Isaiah:
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots…. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; the Gentiles shall beseech it, and his rest shall be glorious.” – Isaiah 11:1,10
“He shall startle many nations, kings shall shut their mouth at him. For they to whom it was not told of him, have seen; and they that heard not, have beheld.” – Isaiah 52:15
The Chant is from the choir at North American College Choir. The Chant for Tuesday (O Key of David) is here.
