Vocation watch: New sisters & brothers & WYD July 17, 2008

Benedict XVI in Oz

Great coverage of World Youth Day 2008, in Australia, can be found at EWTN. Meanwhile…

It’s that time of year – postulants become novices, second-year novices make first vows, and so forth –
here are some of the first out the gate:

The very lovely Carmelite Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Los Angeles
have brought two novices into the novitiate and celebrate three novices into first profession. Links go to slideshows of The Novitiate Entrances of Sr. Cora of the Immaculate Heart and Sr. Teresa of St. Augustine, to the First Vows of Sr. Maralisa of the Holy Trinity, Sr. Marie Rachel of the Sacred Wounds and Sr. Julianne of Jesus and Mary. They are blogging World Youth Day, and charmingly, here.

Go Here
, click on NUN NEWS and then NUN NEWS again to see the beautiful pictures of a radiant Sr. Mary Immaculata, PCPA, take her first monastic vows. Lovely.

At St. Vincent’s Archabbey,
five young men are invested in robes and named Benedictine Monks. Nice pics of Brothers Pio, Albert, John Paul, Isadore and Jean-Luc.

The Sisters of Life
just named Eleven New Novices (scroll down for pictures): Sisters: Mariae Veritas, Mariae Agnus Dei, Bethany Madonna, Bernadette Therese, Catherine Peter, Maria Ann Michaela, Mary Angelica, Amata Filia, Mary Theotokos and Talitha Guadalupe. They look radiant!

One of the novices, Sr. Mariae Agnus Dei
, writes of the silent witness of the habit at WYD.

Needless to say, after walking the streets of Sydney, Australia for a week, there isn’t a flicker of ambiguity about what I am about, and the powerful witness of the habit.
“You are the first Sister in habit I have seen in twenty-three years!” said one woman.

“I just LOVE your robes…vestments…why your’e so young! Tell me, what ARE you?” exclaimed another Aussie. The stares are unabashed, and the cellphones and cameras are snapping pictures at furious rates. At times you feel like a bit of a tourist attraction as a five minute walk in the city guarantees a strangers request for a picture with you. If this wasn’t enough, (and I give my word this is a true account) I sat in transit on the bus sure that the stylish, blonde-haired, twenty-something, deep into the tunes of her i-pod would remain indifferent to me…within five minutes she had removed her head gear and was inquiring about mine. With cordial curiosity and openness she asked question after question. I was the very first Sister she had ever seen

The Passionist Nuns of St. Joseph’s Monastery
just welcomed Sharon’s arrival to the postulancy, and on Saturday they welcome Shannon to same. Hopefully if both young women persevere in the life, their names in religion will not be Agnes and Agatha or Marian and Miriam. Sounds like anyone with a hearing deficiency in the house is in for a confusing year!

Pro Soccer Player Chase Hilgenbrinck,
26 is retiring to become a priest Another young Catholic “apologizes” for her faith.

Some Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George,
second year novices, reflect on their upcoming vows.

Sr. Francesca and Sr. Eva Marie
receive the habit of the Cistercian Novice.

The Benedictine Sisters of Rock Island, IL
welcome a postulant and a novice and have another postulant due shortly!

Sisters Jennifer and Joanne
make solemn (final) professions as Sisters of St. Paul.

A very sad story of a young man
about to enter the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate but has died trying to save his father’s life.

The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration
welcomed Postulant Mary at Clyde, MO.

Brad at Roman Catholic Vocations
links to a story (scroll down) about how habited religious are attracting young people at the World Youth Day in Australia. This is a great picture!

These Benedictine Monks have a chart-topping hit
but they’re not rockstars, except at WYD.

Finally – and now for something completely different!
