Although EWTN had already made a statement announcing that it was pulling its Father Corapi programing until the matters concerning him are settled, the network must have gotten a lot of negative feedback from people who are hurting about the controversy and also — I am sadly sure — from people telling them what shameful, disloyal Catholics they are, and threatening to never contribute another dime to their operation, and so they’ve released a fuller statement: We are aware that... Read more

A great role, a great performance and a GREAT dress. One of my all-time favorites. No one could wear white like Elizabeth Taylor. And she had the tiniest waist! I always appreciated that Taylor was a shortie, curvy woman, and not an immense stick-insect — even though my other film femme fave was Katharine Hepburn. She and Roddy McDowell were known in their industry to be the most loyal friends and confidantes one could have, and that’s not a bad... Read more

I’ll be out most of Wednesday, and wanted to direct you toward three pieces by our columnists, today – “Amazing Catechist:” Lisa Mladinich has advice on how to teach reverence to your kids and students “All things New:” Deacon Greg Kandra learns that the Corapi story is relevant to some in some ways, and to all in other ways “A Book of Sparks:” Heather King is confronted with the reality that there is hostility to faith, and a Divine answer... Read more

As Deacon Greg points out, this video is a nice Lenten reminder that we have the means of unburdening ourselves and making things right. The video was cute and also a little sad for me; I hated seeing Denver so burdened. I believe God hates to see us so burdened by our sins, too. And the owner makes a good point with the second dog who “let it happen.” We are supposed to help each other through our worst temptations.... Read more

An aggrieved party writes that he is offended by what he perceives to be my subtle attack on gay marriage. Because that’s what Catholics obsess on all day, obviously. Once again, projection, much? The piece in question is actually about the blood covenant that exists between God and humanity and the way it is reflected and given fruitfulness in the shedding of our foreskins and hymens. I know, I know, just saying the words makes people feel all ughy. But... Read more

My Tuesday column at First Things is up, and today we’re talking about the strange gods we put before us and the toxic effect it has had on our politics: [In Barack Obama] . . . chattering classes, largely indifferent-to-agnostic-to-hostile toward religion, had suddenly found themselves a god, and to speak his name in vain could not be countenanced. Heretics sinning against the speak-not commandment were speedily feathered with the gooiest tar available and then ostracized from polite company. But... Read more

Even your religion. Max Lindenman describes his experience: So great was my desperation that I felt no surprise, only relief, at finding the wit I sought on a right-wing discussion board, in the religion forum, and among the Catholics. Before Ted Haggard’s fall and Rick Warren’s rise, a certain section of American Bible Christianity was feeling its bloodiest and most thunderous. Members of the board’s fundamentalist contingent approached religious debate as they would a drunken game of Spades. Raise any... Read more

“God knows full well all that is happening and if Father Corapi is innocent as he claims, then perhaps the priest is being used as a poster child to fix a broken process. “ — Diane Korzeniewski, TeDeum Laudamus Blog Those are the sanest words yet written about this story, which is producing a lot of sound and fury in some quarters, signifying not-much, and producing little-to no light. I can’t remember if it was a comment or an email... Read more

Archbishop Timothy Dolan, who shared with moving honesty the story of his encounter with an angry Catholic here will be featured tomorrow night on 60 minutes. Even though 60 minutes starts the same time as In the Arena (the real one, not Spitzer’s) that’s one episode I will be sure to watch. Asked if he feared the impact of the scandal would go on forever, Dolan replies, “In some ways, I don’t want it to be over, because…this was such... Read more
