…our new missal translation, to debut in Advent of 2011. They will be very similar to the earliest translations of the Latin, which some of us learned and loved as children: My memory of the Traditional Mass is cloudy and vague, and I suspect a bit romantic, but I recollect the first translations of the Novus Ordo very well; they were more exact, and more spiritually focused than what eventually followed. We easily learned our vernacular responses, which were pretty... Read more

NYPost Opinion Photo/Jeff Day Yesterday, I wrote here that if we had not so utterly failed in rebuilding at Ground Zero, the Cordoba House, Islamic Cultural Center/Mosque, don’t-call-it-a-mosque-Park51 currently occupying our thoughts would not have been an issue, at all: In a near-decade that “something” could have taken the form of a park, or a memorial, or a glistening new tower, and the construction of a mosque two blocks thence would have been nothing more than a reinforcement of the... Read more

Ed Morrissey didn’t mean to do it, but with this post he got me all wrapped up in one of my favorite pop songs: You need to know this situation’s getting old And now the more you talk The less I can take, oh I’m looking for attention Not another question Should you stay or should you go? Well, if you don’t have the answer Why are you still standin’ here? Hey, hey, hey, hey Just walk away The traffic... Read more

A gorgeous remembrance of Sr. Angelika, OSB, by her Abbess at St. Walburga’s: In 1980, with Mother Maria-Thomas as superior, she was chosen to be the prioress. She served this call beautifully for many, many years. And she encouraged us in the same way that she encouraged the young monks. One of the sisters was saying this morning that you would go to her with a problem and she would sit there and listen very intently and she would give... Read more

Skojec Kid in Bookcase I love Steve Skojec’s photograph of one of his sons self-crammed into the bookcase. It’s a terrifically honest shot that says, “yes, my kids get into things; the house is not perfect. We live here.” And it reminds me of the situations my sons got themselves into, and the days I thought would never pass, but now so greatly miss. The picture is also a terrific metaphor, too; the child has climbed higher than he knew... Read more

State Opera House, Vienna My latest weekly column is up on the homepage. Today, we discuss the self-loathing which is killing Europe and slowly taking hold in America, as well: “Vienna is dying,” I wrote in my journal. “While traipsing its avenues and hopping on and off of buses, we see a materialistic society bearing more dogs on leashes than children in strollers. The concierge is from Turkey. The hotel staff is mostly Asian, and the taxi driver appears to... Read more

Little Sisters of the Poor, First Vows, July 2010 It’s that time of year again, when postulants receive the habit, novices take their first vows and some finally arrive at the long-hoped-for day of final profession. Above we see Sisters Amy Marie, Dara Catherine, Judith, and Maria Catherine four newly-professed Little Sisters of the Poor, just after making their first profession. Five new novices were also welcomed to the community in Queens, New York. Their photo album is here. And... Read more

A while back I mentioned that the Poor Clare’s of Perpetual Adoration, who are establishing themselves in Arizona, were showing off their stained glass designs for the planned chapel of Our Lady of Solitude Monastery, and looking for donors. At the time, I was wishing I had the sort of cash that could fund the window for Bl. Pier Georgio Frassati. On August 7th, the sisters celebrated the installation of the first complete windows. Gorgeous…but I think the St. Clare... Read more
