In the late 1970’s the genial science historian James Burke wrote and presented a ten-part series entitled Connections, which became appointment-tv for my husband and me. He had a way of applying past lessons to present circumstances that was both fascinating and entertaining and sometimes–as in this video–loaded with the prescience that comes from actually listening to history. At about the 3:30 mark, you find Burke once again presenting past as prelude: ” The last time a world empire fell... Read more

Exciting news from one of Christianity’s earliest seats, and the UK Daily Mail: The world’s earliest illustrated Christian book has been saved by a British charity which located it at a remote Ethiopian monastery. The incredible Garima Gospels are named after a monk who arrived in the African country in the fifth century and is said to have copied them out in just one day. Beautifully illustrated, the colours are still vivid and thanks to the Ethiopian Heritage Fund have... Read more

UPDATE: Bender gives us this in the comments; George Washington being told what to do by the “idiotic cerebral meritocracy”: This piece by Larry Getlen, at the NY Post is a must-read for the day: Washington’s plan was to conquer the Hessians on Dec. 26 by sending troops across the Delaware in three sections — under cover of darkness — the night before. Colonels John Cadwalader and Daniel Hitchcock would lead 1,800 men to block potential Hessian reinforcements from arriving... Read more

My son showed me a bit of “drunk history” last night. Apparently a guest agrees to be plied with liquor until he/she can barely stand, and then attempt to articulate a moment in history–on camera. Their musings are then subsequently dramatized, using the inebriated audio. I found most of videos to be tedious, but this one, wherein Jen Kirkman discusses the relationship of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass, was actually pretty funny. Will Ferrell and the great Don Cheadle are... Read more

When I was in elementary school, the typical class had 52 students, with one nun in charge of getting information into our heads. The public schools had a better student-to-teacher ratio, but outside of religion the courses were the same, and they included a quaint little class called “civics.” Civics class taught you things like: when, how and why America was formed. What the Declaration of Independence was; what the Constitution said, and the origination of the Bill of Rights.... Read more

I’ve been noticing how scarce seem the pictures of damage to the coastal wildlife of the Gulf. Now I know why. More at Hot Air; be sure to watch the second video. I wonder how much different all of this would be had the federal government–who is responsible for the protection of these waters–had not talked big about “stepping on necks” awhile doing nothing; if it had accepted the help and expertise of numerous nations, rather than waving them off;... Read more

Passed along to my by one of my sons. The thoughts are not original, but the presentation itself is remarkably clever and it does draw you in. Do I endorse it? I believe in free markets. But, perhaps because of my formation, I do understand that neither capitalism or socialism are flawless vehicles; both (whether “intentionally” or not) leave some people on the sidelines. Capitalism does often foment greed and can be de-humanizing in terms of wage-exploitation (among other things)... Read more

So last night my husband used a birthday present and dragged me out, kicking and screaming, to a small local music theater on Long Island to see Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. Where we proceeded to have a great time. The 2010 version of the band consists of Ringo, Wally Palmer of the Romantics, Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter, Gary Wright, Richard Page and Gregg Bissonette, and if you are inclined to think it a pathetic gathering of middle-aged (and... Read more

Oh, here he is again, and he’s not even on a horse, but the whole commercial is full of WIN! I’ve watched it several times. It’s been a busy day. A girl’s gotta clear her head! And for the men: thoughts on eye candy and conservative women! Read more
