This is the greatest stuff I’ve ever used! You guys know that when I find a truly great product, and pronounce it The Greatest Coffee in the World, or the Best Lip Balm Evah or the Best Chant Album Evah, I don’t do it lightly. So, let me tell you, this product is a remarkably effective topical pain killer, that you don’t even have to rub in. I’d bought a 16 oz. bottle some years ago, from a massage therapist,... Read more

Well, Ted Kennedy won’t have them destroying his pristine view of Nantucket Sound, but The Capitalists Who Are Eager For You To Obey are busy selling these posters, 2 at a clip, hoping people will paper the nation with the latest USSR-flavored Propaganda Poster, so that you and I will see these windfans, wherever we turn. (Thanks to Philaver and Larwyn) The People’s Cube couldn’t spoof it better Yes, you can buy it at a place called (I’m not kidding,... Read more

A few updates from our prayer requests of yesterday: Regarding Heather, they young mother who was diagnosed with cancer while pregnant (and safely delivered of her son, Heath), who seemed near death on Monday: Heather’s sudden problem was an infection and that her fever is down and they were able to insert a feeding tube today. Considering on Monday, they told the family she probably wouldn’t live three days, that is its own small miracle. Hopefully, the feeding tube will... Read more

You need an IT guy in the family because things fall apart. Centers do not hold. Also things like mail programs get corrupted. Other things get messed up because Firefox crashed. Then, when you are whimpering in the corner, because you haven’t a clue how to deal with any of it, your Elder Son, who is back in school to get all kinds of mysterious computer certifications, comes in. Behold the IT guy: he is a hero in the mold... Read more

A few weeks ago, we talked about an Anchoress reader (Joseph) who is facing a frightening deterioration of his brain function, and many offered to pray for him (for which I know he is touched and grateful.) Now reader Sarah, who has been a longtime friend of this blog (she is our resident Lutheran who loves Catholic saints but was unhappy, indeed, when I brought up St. Thomas More!) and she is a very kind, very sweet Southern Belle of... Read more

Sr. Maria Lourdes, L.S.P. makes her First Profession of Vows Some of you may remember Sr. Maria Lourdes from her appearance on In the Arena a few months back. Making the acquaintance of Sr. Lourdes, Sr. Camille and Sr. Mary Richard was a memorable day; all three women were lit with uncommon joy and were so lovely to talk to. Sr. Lourdes stayed in my awareness (and my prayers) because she was so serenely composed, even when discussing her excitement... Read more

This is a cool story: For more than four years, Kathryn Bloomquist has prepared to formalize a life of solitude and prayer. Late last month, she made the final step and was consecrated as a hermitess before Bishop Paul Coakley and a few witnesses. Now, as Sister Kathryn Ann of the Holy Angels, she will spend her days mostly in solitude, “lived to the praise of God and the salvation of the world,” she explains. It is a path she... Read more

“There are two forms of excess; to exclude reason and to admit nothing but reason.” – Blaise Pascal “I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “Plans of fullness, not of harm. To give you a future, and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11 “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” – Matthew 6:34 A couple of years ago, in pondering the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, I wrote: If one goes back to the first lines... Read more

St. Mary Magdalene, Pray for Us At our most recent Big Family Party I got into a conversation with a dear friend of the family – a lady in her 70’s who is very modern-thinking, and on top of the conventional wisdom. Somehow the conversation got into television programming, and a general consensus was reached: television was more entertaining when there were five channels to choose from and afternoon and late-night movies. Now? “Hundreds of channels and there’s never anything... Read more
