I’m not entirely sure the president hasn’t reached outside of the scope of his job in setting emission standards – oh, what am I talking about – Obama is the Imperial President; the scope of his job extends to any place he says it does! He can do anything he wants to; (cuz he won) and the press won’t complain. If he wants to come over to your house tomorrow and inspect your pantry shelves to make sure you’re getting... Read more

I know many people who love the Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series of novels, including Julie at Happy Catholic, whose recommendations are always worth taking, but I have been so enthralled with Terry Pratchett’s Discword series, I’d neglected Harry Dresden. Harry Dresden is a Wizard, and his office door reads: Harry Dresden – Wizard Lost Items Found, Paranormal Investigations. Consulting, Advice, Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses, Parties or Other Entertainment Yesterday, in talking about the list of folks... Read more

So, to no one’s surprise, it looks like the US Government is going into the car business, something our founders certainly never intended. I keep watching Obama and wondering if he is trying to lead America to further greatness, or to simply bring her to heel? There is an absolute disconnect between what Obama says, and what he does. In his first 100 days he said he had “no interest” in running the banking and auto industries in this country,... Read more

Have had this song in my head for two days. A bit more: Remember when there was an uproar because some people thought this song was about drugs, that “silver girl” meant a heroin syringe? Great music will stand the test of time and stupid controversies. Read more

Hey, why not? I just got three sweet emails from readers saying generous things about the blog (thanks, guys, I appreciate it) and one funny email from someone who attended a wedding reception where the favors were various sample packs of Mystic Monk Coffee! Apparently there was much hoarding by some guests, and serious trading between caffeine/decaf guests and those who wanted the flavored coffees. I keep telling you The Monks make some great Coffee. I’d never thought of a... Read more

Apropos of the post below (!) I realize yeah, I am kind of tired. Yeah, I am a little fried. And yeah, I have some stuff over here that needs doing, and a big party to plan (it seems I am forever planning parties for others, and that’s odd when one considers, as I admitted here, that my doormat says “go away”). I also have an interview I want to prep for, and two story ideas I’ve been allowing to... Read more

Amba wonders if some bloggers are feeling blogged out? A bunch of us seem to have gone blooey all at once, as if responding helplessly to some shift in the heavens, or in the collective unconscious. The cultural wavefront has moved on, but whither? Twitter feels transitional, somehow. But blogging just seems to have peaked and ebbed . . . to have reached a saturation point, or point of diminishing returns. Maybe after several years of emptying out our minds... Read more

The AP is reporting thusly: On the eve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s crucial visit to Washington, his defense minister suggested Saturday the Israeli leader might be ready to endorse a Palestinian state when he meets President Barack Obama. That would be a significant shift for Netanyahu, who has made clear in the past that he does not think the Palestinians are ready to rule themselves. But that position has put him at odds with long-standing U.S. policy that supports... Read more

My latest piece for Pajamas Media is up this morning, entitled Pope Brings his Gentle Touch to the Holy Land. An excerpt: Israel’s unending struggle is written into her very name, Isra-El: “struggles with God.” Since its formation in 1948, the world has watched the tumult of the modern state of Israel and one thing remains unclear: is the “struggle” between Israel herself and God, or between Israel and the world, with God beside her? Either way, that Israel will... Read more

Folks, just a word of caution – tonight First Things will be launching its new design, which will of course affect our happy home, here. The design is very nice; this blog will mostly look the same, but it will have a sort of grey framing around it, and archives and categories and such will be in drop windows, but it should basically feel the same for you. I’m a little concerned that some of you may experience “data error”... Read more
