Vespers with the beautiful O Antiphon for the night are podcasted here. My talk afterwards is disjointed and the prayer pretty simple. Please pray for the people I mention – they all need our prayers. I do too. When we pray for others while we’re in the midsts of uncertainty and anxiety, ourselves, it helps everyone. The prayee and the pray-or. Read more

O Radix Jesse, qui stas in signum populorum, super quem continebunt reges os suum, quem Gentes deprecabuntur: veni ad liberandum nos, jam noli tardare. O Root of Jesse, which standest for an ensign of the people, at whom kings shall shut their mouths; to whom the Gentiles shall seek: Come and deliver us, and tarry not. The Benedictine offers thoughts on the root of Jesse. I am curious to know…are you liking these O Antiphons? Do you find them to... Read more

Just thought you might be interested in this – a buncha Catholics sittin’ around gassing away about what lies ahead for Catholics as “movement” voters! Some interesting perspectives from center-right Catholic writers you may recognise, and in the middle I get to wag my finger and jump on a soapbox, declaring, first off that I dislike the notion of “movements” as a whole and besides, oversensitive Catholics (and hyper-hurt-feeling Christianity as-a-whole) are ticking me off with all the whining! I’m... Read more

The schedule is a bit mad today and the house a bit full. Here is a “shorter” version of Evening Prayer for which I used today’s entry from Magnificat Magazine, which I highly recommend to you, particularly if – like many – the full-length Liturgy of the Hours is just more than your daily schedule can handle. After the prayer, which is substantially shorter than normal Vespers, I read an except from Longfellow’s “Introitus” of “The Divine Tragedy” just because... Read more

As the set lays low, we continue with our beautiful O Antiphons of Vespers: O Adonai! O Adonai, et Dux domus Israel, qui Moysi in igne flammae rubi apparuisti, et ei in Sina legem dedisti: veni ad redimendum nos in brachio extento. O Adonai, and Leader of the house of Israel, Who didst appear to Moses in the flame of the burning bush, and didst give unto him the Law on Sinai: come and with an outstretched arm redeem us.... Read more

Those Oreo Truffles: Recipe here. In answer to an email, no they are not too rich, and yes, they taste like truffles, not Oreos. If you don’t believe me, here is a note from Reader Ellen: I was intrigued enough to try it, though, and I now join the raving masses who love them! I took them to my department’s Christmas lunch today, and had multiple requests for the recipe. Next time I make them, I’m adding Grand Marnier! The... Read more

The child you are looking at is Namrata Nayak. Her face was disfigured when when Hindu extremists bombed her home last August, looking to kill Christians. I am struck by her power and beauty, which is transmitted through her eyes. One does not see the scars for the steadiness and fullness of Namrata Nayak’s eyes. Her eyes are fearless. She is unintimidated. She looks directly at you, with a collectedness and assurance that only comes from deep interior knowledge. Namrata... Read more

Today with Vespers we begin the beautiful “O Antiphons” of the last 7 nights of Advent O Sapientia, quæ ex ore Altissimi prodiisti, attingens a fine usque ad finem, fortiter suaviterque disponens omnia: veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiæ “O’Wisdom that comest out of the mouth of the Most High, that reachest from one end to another, and orderest all things mightily and sweetly, come to teach us the way of prudence!” More on the antiphons: here and here Read more

I love it when the obscure-ish things I love break out! This is very cool. Amazon has an “exclusive” release of Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, the brilliant-if-too-short (43 minutes) musical – silly, irreverent, surprisingly infectious – that completely bowled over our whole family. We were already fans of Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion, but if we hadn’t been, this would have done the trick. Great fun. They’re putting out the soundtrack, too. I just found my stocking... Read more

Via re this; surprised it’s not for this. Guess I forgot to shave, that day! It’s Diva-time again! And once again I am in very Diva-y Company! I have long defined a diva as strong, talented and confident woman who commands the respect of men. This year, we will once again determine which blogress commands the most respect of gay conservative men. She need not be conservative herself (at least three of the nominees below are not), but must by... Read more
