Hey! I’m way behind on this! Seems way back on November 3, the 2008 Weblog Awards began their nominating process! This is always a fun time – a great opportunity to discover new blogs that might otherwise slip under the radar, and it’s always fun to engage in good-natured rivalry with other nominated blogs. Julie at Happy Catholic, one of my all-time favorite blogs, seems to have reminded Deacon Greg about the awards, but Deacon Greg – that scoundrel! –... Read more

After reading this execrable bit of bigotry and preening martyrdom by Kathleen Parker – who apparently has discovered that the magic formula for “instant media love” is “going maverick on your own tribe,” – I am considering adding her to my list of Media Whores and Sad She-Clowns who – in excessive spurts of spirit brought on by sudden media praise – cross lines and go way too far. Parker, who had her right-wing, “Christianist” Conservative moments until she found... Read more

I like this short lesson from Abbess Maria-Michael Newe, OSB, of St. Walburga’s Abbey of Benedictines, in Colorado. She doesn’t harangue, but she gives food for thought to the roustabout internets, so lively with opinion: Sometimes the things you hang on to the tightest are the very things you should get rid of first; because they’re the very things that tie your heart down. They keep you from seeking God because you spend so much time protecting those things or... Read more

It’s been fun to give folks some ideas for Christmas shopping the last few years, but now I’m stuck and could use some suggestions. Here’s the deal – last year I got some of my little nieces and nephews these terrific DVD’s put out by the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist through their EWTN series, Truth In the Heart. You can see little glimpses of the videos on this page. Anyhow, I’m going to buy relevant “Season 2’s”... Read more

Sorry so quiet. I’m still struggling to get through my emails – I may just hit delete and call myself caught up – and I have some paying work that needs to be get done, but never say I leave you empty-handed. I give you the Divine Miss Ella Fitzgerald, my heroine, my queen, singing Gershwin and leaving nothing for anyone else to follow up with! More: Can’t be embedded, but here’s Miss Ella mixed with Miss Sarah Vaughn Lush... Read more

In plowing through my email since coming home, I hit a missive of peculiar malice, one that started out calling me an uneducated Jesus-freak, a repressed, sex-hating nutcase who was probably writing drunk most days, and a knuckledragging, know-nothing creationist racist, besides. Then she got nasty. My retreat was so good that I’m finding myself pretty easily amused just now, and the email brought to mind a song I learned in my childhood, which made me smile. Finding the song... Read more

Retreat was excellent, but I need to process it a little before I write about it. Meanwhile, a quick look around tells me I didn’t miss much, newswise. Guns: Instapundit links to two pieces on increased gun sales – or the perception of it. I don’t know if I buy the cause and effect. I’ve been contemplating buying a gun for at least two years, and it has nothing to do with politics or social issues, or the election. It’s... Read more

Via Julie at at Happy Catholic, you’ll enjoy this: Chad, Matt and Rob present The Time Machine. It’s goofy interactive fun, but fair warning – this is an addictive little time-waster. I offer it to you as I head over to the email and try to catch up. Retreat was great. I will write about it in a bit! Read more

As I leave for retreat, I note it’s getting pretty hot in California and elsewhere regarding Proposition 8. Almost sad to be incommunicado as the debate rages. Does seem to me, though – from a strictly legislative point of view, anyhow – that the “will of the people,” is supposed to mean something. Had gay marriage been approved, that would certainly (and justly) be the case, wouldn’t it? As my Li’l Bro Thom said to a co-worker at his job... Read more
