As Voltaire said: ‘Repentance for our faults can alone take the place of innocence, and that, to show ourselves repentant, we must begin by declaring them.’ Few Catholic customs have been subjected to greater criticism than that of going to Confession. One can do no better than to initiate this discussion with the sneering comment of George Bernard Shaw to G.K Chesterton after his conversion: ‘Your portly kneeling figure’ in the confessional would be ‘incredible, monstrous, comic.’ More enlightened was... Read more

Catholic Carnival is here. Some interesting pieces on life, personhood and guardian angels. The fourth Homeschooling Carnival is here. I’m not a homeschooler, but I think if I were just beginning my family, it is an option I would seriously consider, these days. Again, some very interesting writing. Read more

It’s a clever headline, Student wins right to skirt rules. I understand the principal’s stand in this, and I do agree that there should be some sort of dress code for students, specifically a code prohibiting lewd clothing or short-shorts or bare midriffs or offensive messages. But shorts? The school district has legislated WHEN they may be worn? That seems odd to me. And it should be noted that bringing in the ACLU only accomplished letting a boy wear a... Read more

I rarely laugh so hard that I’m holding my sides, but listmaker’s comments regarding Special Agent Jack Bauer at Polipundit got me. It’s brilliant. My favorites: 6) Jack Bauer got Hellen Keller to talk. 16) When life gave Jack Bauer lemons, he used them to kill terrorists. Jack Bauer f*cking hates lemonade. 17) In grade school, a little boy punched Kimberly Bauer, and Kimberly ran home to tell her dad. That little boy’s name? Stephen Hawking. 20) In kindergarten, Jack... Read more

Sigmund Carl and Alfred have an urgent post and several good links on the subject. “…responsible nations and leaders cannot fall back and claim ‘bluster’ every time they are called on uttering racist, bigoted and hateful remarks. When leaders and nations espouse views that are clearly out of the norm, when they use their own government controlled media to propagate hate and other outrages, they must be marginalized. There are consequences for inappropriate behavior, not the least of which is... Read more

This, to me seems a smart interactive idea that makes a great more sense than the LA Time’s disasterous “wiki-editorial” try. Starting this week, you pick the news Wisconsin State Journal reader Eric Norman of Ridgeway figures he has a better handle than editors on what this newspaper ought to publish on page one. “Could you please cease printing sports stories on the front page?” Norman asked editors in an e-mail. “You have a sports section; that’s where they belong.... Read more

Ed Driscoll gives a little history lesson about how the Nazis dealt with opposition. Hint: it more than underscores just why calling The Bush Administration (or conservatives in general) “Nazis” makes one look foolish. You’ll want to read it all, including Ed’s update. Ace has related thoughts. Speaking of Nazis – if you missed it, here’s another chance to read neo-neocon’s remarkable piece on Magda Goebbels. I make myself resonsible. I belonged. I believed in Hitler and for long enough... Read more

The San Francisco Branch: From Zombietime. You’ll want to go there and check it out. As usual, be prepared to see the F word in prominence; it’s the adolescent response to everything. Although, I must say, the Christians with the weapons and “Jezebels” signs were not really helpful, either. Read more
