The boy in the skirt

The boy in the skirt January 25, 2006

It’s a clever headline, Student wins right to skirt rules.

I understand the principal’s stand in this, and I do agree that there should be some sort of dress code for students, specifically a code prohibiting lewd clothing or short-shorts or bare midriffs or offensive messages. But shorts? The school district has legislated WHEN they may be worn? That seems odd to me.

And it should be noted that bringing in the ACLU only accomplished letting a boy wear a skirt. The student still did not win; shorts are still out until spring.

I can’t help thinking all of this was needlessly disruptive. A boy in a skirt is less distracting than a boy in shorts?

Then again, it may seem odd to me because one of my elder son’s freinds has not worn long pants since, perhaps the second grade. The kid just likes shorts. He’s a junior in college now, and no matter what the weather, he’s in shorts.

But, of course, Buster has been known to wander about in a kilt now and then, so I’m perhaps more sympathetic than most to kids eccentricities re clothing.
