Not that I would ever dare to tell you what to read at lunch…but if you’re looking for suggestions: Ankle Biting Pundit says Conservatives are looking toward McCain for ’08. Keep scrolling, tehre’s more good stuff under that. Gay Patriot notes that today is the 5 year anniversary of the END of the 2000 election and compares 12/12 liberals to 9/11 conservatives. An interesting piece. John Hawkins has rounded up 40 obnoxious quotes of 2005 and yes, the remarks are... Read more

I can’t imagine why, checking out my site meter (is that the funnest part of blogging, or what?) I see several people pulling these two obscure posts out of the archives: The 20 people screwing up America The Death of Pop Culture, How the Mighty are Fallen. I don’t know why y’all are looking for them, but here you go. Also, I guess because of Kyoto talk this weekend, Beyond Kyoto – Effective work sans the UN. Read more

Joseph at Straight Shot of Politics has decided that he is a consumer of news and information, while I and others like me are not so much consumers of news and informations as philosophers about how news should be reported. When I saw this, I thought to myself, “Now I know why most blogger critics of news coverage [whatever their political views] and I are simply not on the same page!” I am interested in news. They are interested in... Read more

A peak into how some Dominican monastics keep Advent. Starting with the prioress and then working down in Order of Profession each sisters lights the candles at the Magnificat at Vespers and the next day at the Alleluia at Mass. To watch the elder sisters light it one can only be reminded of the prophets waiting and yearning for the promised Messiah. Advent is a penitential season, not quite the same as Lent but still penitential. We have the fast... Read more

Via Confederate Yankee, passing on a message from Marine Corps Moms: Please forgive the mass e-mail. I’ve never done it before but this is for our deployed troops. For the last 3 months, volunteers all over the country are making sure that our Marines receive a touch of home for Christmas. We’ve sent over 12,000 hand sewn Christmas stockings filled with food, games, socks, handwarmers, and other useful items. In addition, we’ve sent boxes filled with candy, beefsticks, cheese, DVDs,... Read more

I loved Richard Pryor. I loved his willingness to be vulnerable and share his ups and downs, to comment on hard issues with a strange grace that proclaimed the truth about the world, but with a kind of shrug that suggested both weariness and optimism, more sadness than anger, and shared humanity and inhumanity. I always had the sense that he was his own worst enemy, that he had no interest in cultivating enemies elsewhere. He did not seem to... Read more

Buster was asked – two hours before a play performance – if he would step into the role of Santa Claus in a local community Christmas production that travels around from library to school to kiddie groups. Since one of his props would be a clipboard on which he could keep his lines, he agreed. I understand his first performance was a bit shaky, but the next day’s was much better, and he’ll be playing St. Nicholas several more times... Read more

I have heard the phrase repeated to me a few times by stunned liberals…”I don’t understand it, you’re a Conservative, but I still find I like you…” Last week my best pal, who works within the public school system, encountered the same remark from a Social Studies teacher – “I shouldn’t like you; you’re a conservative. And yet, I do like you a lot.” My pal was taken aback. “He ‘shouldn’t’ like me because I’m a conservative? What sort of... Read more

That the Weblog Awards had been generating so much blogger reaction. I just assumed everyone would, like me, wheedle here and there for votes (good naturedly) and have fun with it. Not so. Alexandra writes of some rather disingenuous, Sean Pennesque “These awards don’t mean anything because they’re given out by (conservatives!) the establishment,” tirades coming from the left, even as they still wheedle for votes. Nice. One wonders – if a lefty were to put together something as time-consuming... Read more
