Jonah Goldberg is finding politics less fun these days. LaShawn Barber says she’s getting a little bored with it too. I’m not bored with it, yet, but I will agree that it’s less fun. It’s hard to have fun with politics when so many – on both sides – have become so reactionary and knee-jerk that they’ve lost their ability to once in a while crack a smile, or concede any small point to the other side. Tip O’ Neill... Read more

So, this is what happens when you are fasting but you still have to cook supper. You find a new recipe for chicken that sounds good and you make it. And the suppertime conversation goes like this: Hubby: What is this? Me: It’s a new recipe. It sounded good. Buster: Mom…you’re fasting. Everything sounds good to you right now. Me: It’s not good? Hubby: Um…no. Not really. It’s okay…but…please don’t ever make this again. Ever. Buster: I hate to say... Read more

Beth at My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy links to a disturbing – not surprising, but disturbing – image of the Madonna and Child, the poster for a new play premiering in Belgium, entitled, Our Lady of Flanders. Says a Belgium paper: The Brussels magazine Brussel XL asked the author: “Some of the dialogues are interspersed with antisemitism. What exactly is the meaning of that?” Ben Chikha answered: “Antisemitism is alive amongst North Africans, whether you like it or not. It... Read more

A pal in Birmingham, Alabama writes and sends this picture: There’s an amazing display in the sky over Birmingham right now! I’m not crazy because other people see it too. Hopefully the newspaper got a decent photo of it. It’s a beautiful day here with mainly blue skies and thin wispy clouds way up high. More clouds have moved in over the past hour creating a slightly filtered look — kind of like a layer of tissue paper. There is... Read more

California Conservative made a good headline change catch: First headline: Sheehan, anti-war demonstrators flock to Washington Three hours later, same story: Sheehan, anti-war mothers flock to Washington Yeah…because the press is not trying to influence anyone’s understanding of anything. Instapundit has more about the backgrounds of these habitual protestors – few of whom, it seems, are mothers. Confederate Yankee has some more thoughts on this. California Conservative also has some SPECTACULAR pictures of Katrina landing. Read more

Okay, permit me to brag a little, here, because I must, I simply must, if only because poor Buster has been so sick… I’ve mentioned that Buster is musical. He plays alto and tenor sax, clarinet, flute, keyboards, guitar, banjo and ukelele. And blues harminica. The strings and harmonica are self taught. He also has a huge, four-octave basso profundo that he hopes will get him a scholarship, somewhere in two more years. So, yesterday Buster auditioned for a particularly... Read more

There are only a handful of reporters at the NY Times I really respect, and Laurie Goodstein, who covers religion, has been one of them. She is generally very balanced in her reporting, very careful to make sure she is presenting all sides. She doesn’t do it in this piece, though. This piece, while taking the time to quote folks in the pew, spends a great deal of time fomenting sympathy for gay priests and seminarians while skipping over the... Read more

I recall getting a somewhat annoyed with Donna Brazile during the 2000 election, when she said that Al Gore and Joe Lieberman were “not going to let those white boys win…” I mean…it just was such a terrible, race-baiting remark. But beside that, beyond her occasionally annoying remarks, I always liked Brazile, herself. She was capable of intellectual honesty and even would venture to criticise her own party from time-to-time which is a healthy sign for anyone. Beyond that, she... Read more
