Betsy Newmark wrote yesterday – and exceedingly well – on the issue of American History and how our students are being so severely shortchanged by the “social studies” curriculum of the last 30 years. You’ll want to read all her thoughts on the issue, but I loved this part: Instead, the classes became endless exercises in coloring in maps and labeling tables of exports from various countries. The study of Russia involves a lesson coloring in a picture of St.... Read more

A new blog – kinda on par with realclear politics, but focused on the ’06 and ’08 elections. Check it out. Read more

So, everyone is all of a doo-dah about this new Geena Davis show, wherein she will be the first female president. ABC is doing its part to help the Hillary ’08 campaign with this transparent attempt to get the nation “comfortable” with the idea of a woman president – one who will be portrayed as having soft edges, to round out Hillary’s own spear-sharp ones. Funny how campaign-finance laws restrict the free speech of bloggers and independant groups, but don’t... Read more

I recall a lot of indignation last week from the leftist blogs because one of the suspected bombers had not been charged by the Justice Department in 2002. Now, it seems the UK would not allow the US to arrest a terrorist who came back and bit them. Haroon Rashid Aswat, 30, of Indian heritage, is currently in custody in Zambia, U.S. and Zambian officials told CNN. U.S. authorities wanted to capture Aswat, who was then in South Africa, and... Read more

That would be the Department of One Damn Thing After Another. So, I went back to the ear doctor for a re-testing of my hearing loss. Although the recalcitrant infection is finally gone, there was no appreciable improvement – the hearing loss is still in both ears, though somewhat assymetrical. My doctor – who is very nice but younger than me (I’m getting to that age now, where cops and doctors are younger than me and call me, “ma’am,” egad!)... Read more

Once again, they’re taking off all their clothes because…somehow…that means something intelligent. My niece used to get naked when she was having a tantrum, but she outgrew it. This is not work-safe, and if the site of pendulous, sagging breasts, inflated scrotums and transgendered nudity upsets you, you shouldn’t go look. If you’re mightily bored, you can go look, but you’ll still be bored. In which case I highly recommend you go read this article by Cheri Pierson Yecke which... Read more

Remember when Pope Benedict emerged onto the balcony at St. Peter’s, and so many immediate started labeling him, calling him “cold,” and “ruthless,” etc? Everything I have read since that day seems to completely disprove those assertions. Benedict seems enormously pastoral and clear-eyed. I do wish the press would just step out of the picture once in a while, though. The line about how Benedict has said he “would not do only his own will,” is not only stupid –... Read more

SCA looks at justice and finds that while just, it is often not a cause for joy. That God himself hushed the celebrating angels in the face of his own justice. When God saw that the Israelites were celebrating and dancing, he rebukes them. Says God, “How dare you dance while my children are dying!” (an erudite reader, Ben David, notes in the comment section that it was the Angels who were rebuked, not the Israelites. If that is indeed... Read more

Doug at Stones Cry Out points to this article describing Hillary Clinton as under attack for moving into her “centrist” mode. He notes that the Kossacks and Moveon.org people are not actually the majority within the Democrat party, but they are the noisiest. He also writes, and I agree, that Hillary’s big “move” is nothing but posturing. As is, I believe, all this angst from the far-left. Complain all they want, they’ll vote for her in ’08, without even thinking... Read more

Nail Bombs. “You see what is bulging on the sides of the bottle are nails. Many, many nails,” said Robert Ayers, a security expert who was shown the pictures by the American ABC News channel last night. “And the nails are put there so that when the bomb goes off, the nails will tear tissue and kill people in the area. Bombs don’t kill by concussion. Small bombs, they kill by the blast effects of fragments of glass or metal,... Read more
