I’ve tried to avoid partisan politics on this blog. Obviously, I’m a political progressive, but there’s one Republican that I do vote for. I even know a couple of secular humanistic Jews who are Republicans, though it confounds me!
When the stupidity of a candidate for office starts to make my head hurt, I can’t avoid chiming in. This is certainly the case with Delaware’s Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, Christine O’Donnell.
In 1996, MTV covered her campaign against the evils of masturbation. She seemed a little embarrassed by that, dismissing it as college enthusiasm. Then there was a more recent MSNBC clip of her endorsing abstinence for all un-married Americans that was just weird. Her total opposition to providing condoms, even to AIDS-ravaged Africa, was downright offensive.
Bill Maher is releasing an embarrassing clip each week until O’Donnell appears on his Real Time program. She was a very frequent guest on his old show, Politically Incorrect, and he has quite the collection. Last week it was something about witchcraft that I didn’t bother to read about.
This week caught my attention. It’s in the middle of the video below, but here’s the really good part.
O’Donnell said, “You know what — evolution is a myth.”
Then Maher asked her, “Have you ever looked at a monkey?”
At this point, she retorted, “Well then, why aren’t monkeys still evolving into humans?”
“It takes a long time,” dead-panned Maher.
After I was done laughing at her, I became concerned. Could there be a better example of a dangerous combination of radical Christian and scientific ignoramus? This woman could be a United States Senator.
Then I remembered that if elected she will join some like-minded colleagues, even if they don’t utter howlers like this one. Still concerned.
