On June 17, 1703, John Wesley is born in the rectory at Epworth, Lincolnshire, England, the 15th child of the Church of England priest Samuel Wesley. As a student at Oxford University, John Wesley (who, like his father, became an Anglican priest), joined the so-called “Holy Club,” with his brother Charles Wesley and, eventually, with the evangelist George Whitefield. A number of years later, their “club” would evolve into the Protestant Christian tradition known as Methodism.
