the night before last, we had a special overnight house guest.
a huge dragonfly, same colors as the one on the cover of sin boldly, was beating itself silly against our patio light.
we gently lifted it into the bug box my darling aunt patti made for me when i was a little girl. our winged messenger spent the night in the box until sunrise, when we released it and if flew high and away toward the ocean.
listen to your life …
The Dragonfly
You are made of almost nothing
But of enough
To be great eyes
And diaphanous double vans;
To be ceaseless movement,
Unending hunger
Grappling love.
Earth repels you.
Light touches you only to shift into iridescence
Upon your body and wings.
Twice-born, predator,
You split into the heat.
Swift beyond calculation or capture
You dart into the shadow
Which consumes you.
You rocket into the day.
But at last, when the wind flattens the grasses,
For you, the design and purpose stop.
And you fall
With the other husks of summer.

My beloved sister/soul-friend Susan sent me a mix-disk for my birthday. It’s elegantly composed. I’ll post the playlist later, but wanted to share this one song that Suse reminded me of: “Snow on the Sahara” by Angunn. I hadn’t listened to her album in years, but I’d nearly worn it out when I first bought it. So blessed to be reminded of the beauty.
There’s something about the sound and delicacy (and yet might) of this song that evokes in my heart our winged night visitor. So here it is for your edification.
Thank you, Susan.
