HOW TO SAVE A DROWNING MAN … AT LEAST HOPEFULLY “Drowning Man” by U2. Oldy but a goody . . . but. But what do you do the days that you can’t reach out and the last thing you feel capable of is soaring on wings of fecking eagles? Here’s hoping that the God of love and grace we’re always hearing about can reach down and pluck us out of the water by the scruffs of our necks like helpless... Read more
MRS. GOD GIRL: CANCER SURVIVOR The one of the left is the victorious, miraculous cancer survivor in this picture taken today, just a little over a week after her successful double mastectomy surgery for three kinds of breast cancer — a trifecta! She’s healthy, she’s pain free, she’s cancer free, and she’s happier than a cat in a mouse factory. And her daughter — the one on the right — is so grateful she can’t see straight. Grateful to God,... Read more
MRS. GOD GIRL: A QUICK UPDATE … As you might already have guessed, the beautiful lady missing her two front teeth is not, in fact, Mrs. God Girl. She is God Girl’s cousin, Brady, and she lost her second front tooth (just in time for Christmas and with a little help from Cousin Maury) at Mrs. God Girl’s 74th Birthday Party on Sunday. For all of you who have been so graciously praying and sending out good energy for Mom... Read more
HOORAY!!!! MRS. GOD GIRL COMES THROUGH WITH FLYING COLORS! Mom’s just about out of surgery, but the word so far is that it’s gone excellently and there appears to be no cancer in any of her lymph nodes. We’re thrilled. When asked how she’d been doing with the anesthesia, etc., Mom’s doctor said “Like a rock.” Yep. That’s her. Like a rock. Again, thanks for the prayers. xo,God Girl (on 57 cups of coffee) Read more
THE WAITING IS THE HARDEST PART …THINGS TO DO IN A HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM, PART I 1) Take stupid pictures of yourself and your family with laptop. Check. Here we are — my cousin Nell and me — on hour 1.5 of our 6-hour wait while Mrs. God Girl is in surgery. So far so good. Will keep you posted. Next up … Making fun of other families in the waiting room. So far, their extraordinarily loud cell phone ring... Read more

GODSTUFF: ‘THE NATIVITY’: GRITTY, TENDER, HUMAN, FULL OF GRACE The coffee cup in my hand read, “We don’t remember days; we remember moments.” It’s a quote from the late Italian writer Cesare Pavese, and I pondered it, rolling the idea around in my mind as I sipped mocha java and thought about the new film “The Nativity,” which opens in theaters nationwide Friday. I saw “The Nativity,” which tells the story of the birth of Jesus from the perspective of... Read more
GODSTUFF: ONE FAMILY’S AMAZING STORY OF GRACE (a.k.a. HOW GOD GIRL GOT HER GRACE GROOVE BACK) On Thursday, I learned how to make turkey gravy for the first time. I also learned how to find grace — as well as its accompanying posse of joy, hope and love — again. I had an excellent teacher: Kim Kalicky, a remarkably plucky woman with the voice and spirit of a pixie, and the heart of a lion. Kim is the sprightly matriarch... Read more
