GODSTUFF WHITEFOOT: THE PEACE OF WILD THINGS Walking in botanical gardens one recent, perfect, early spring day, a quick burst of movement in the thicket of a yellow Carolina jasmine hedge caught my eye. If you’re a Bruce fan, drop what you’re doing and go buy it. If you’re not a Bruce fan, you should be. And... Read more

Less than a month from today, a little boy from Malawi with a hole in his heart will step off a plane at O’Hare to have life-altering surgery. It’s the journey of his lifetime. Vasco Sylvester, the 10-year-old AIDS orphan I met in Blantyre, Malawi, in 2007, is set to arrive in Chicago on April 25 to undergo surgery to repair a heart defect... Read more

A word about GG’s newspaper column Hi folks. Thanks for reading and for continuing to visit this space. Beginning next week, my column in the Sun-Times will return to running only once a week — the victim of the economic and accompanying space woes that are wrecking havoc on the newspaper industry. There is no column today in the Sun-Times because we are awaiting some outstanding news about Vasco and wanted to hold off until early next week to fill you... Read more

GODSTUFF CHEERS AND HAMANTASHEN: HAPPY PURIM! (A scene from “Home for Purim” from the mockumentary, “For Your Consideration.”) When is it appropriate — and even encouraged, both socially and spiritually — to show up at your house of worship in full costume, make all kinds of racket, and even get really snockered? Well, if you’re a Christian, Muslim or Buddhist, the answer is never. But if you’re Jewish, it’s Purim! Even though I’m not Jewish myself, Purim, which began last... Read more
