Over the past couple of days I read a great book called, Hidden Worldviews: Eight Cultural Stories That Shape Our Lives (Wilkens and Sanford).  One of the “cultural stories” that this book covers is a common theme on this blog: nationalism.  We live in a nation whose citizens often put the cross and the flag together.  Acknowledging this, the authors offer up something of a litmus test for determining if nationalistic pride has co-opted the Kingdom of God.  In the... Read more

*The following is a guest article by Joe Boyd. Find his info at the bottom of the page. I am reading the book unChristian with about ten of my friends. It’s a book primarily about why people outside of Christianity don’t like Christians much anymore. (I didn’t need a book to learn that one.) A certain paragraph really struck me. It angered me, actually. Here it is: Most outsiders are familiar with the story of Christianity-that Jesus was God’s Son... Read more

As most of you know, I do not endorse Mark Driscoll’s book on marriage (based on the content that I am aware of). My main concern is with the hierarchy that his form of complementarianism imposes, holding back women from their God given potential. With that said, I think that he handled himself well in this video interview as a whole. I don’t endorse all of his opinions, but he kept a cool head and seemed respectable. Full Dr. Drew... Read more

Gender “war” might sound excessive.  Perhaps if we frame this within the broader “evangelical culture war,” then the word-choice probably makes sense.  If you’ve read this blog for any amount of time, you know that I believe that the worldwide church should “Liberate Women for Ministry.”  Honestly, the complementarian system holds back the potential for a more beautiful kingdom, filled with 21st century Junia’s and Deborah’s to lead the church forward in her mission.  And yes, I say this as... Read more

This comes from the Rev. Church Currie’s Blog. I invite you, to go there and read the rest of his article, including a way to contact the Kansas Speaker’s office.  Here’s a bit of it… Pat Cunningham reports that Speaker Mike O’Neal compared Michelle Obama to the Grinch in e-mails and later wrote over the holiday: ““I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Mrs. YoMama a wonderful, long Hawaii Christmas vacation — at our expense, of course.” In another e-mail, Speaker O’Neal... Read more

This may give us a glimpse into how silly our debates become. Not that these issues don’t matter, but we need to be careful about demonizing either side of an argument among Christians. Passion is important… I certainly am passionate and have towed this line at times, but lets do all we can to see the best in the “other.” Read more

The following is all quoted from Anabaptists.org After the death of Conrad Grebel (1526) and Felix Manz (1527) Michael Sattler was the most noteworthy leader of the Swiss Brethren. His martyrdom took place only a few months after that of Manz. Michael Sattler was born about 1495 at Staufen near Freiburg in Baden.” Educated at the University of Freiburg, Sattler entered the cloister of St. Peter near Freiburg as a monk, advancing to the position of prior of the cloister.... Read more
