The Person,

Believers in Christ know first hand the work of the Holy Spirit in their personal lives. Here are some basics about the Holy Spirit: He is a Person. He is the third Person of the Trinity- the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. He has emotions. He speaks. He guides. He corrects. He empowers. He equips. In the world we live today, the Holy Spirit is a great necessity for believers that desire nothing but to please God. To help us better understand the Holy Spirit Acts 1:8 paints the picture of why believers need the Holy Spirit, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Godly Wisdom

As parents the Holy Spirit helps us navigate life and all that comes with life with Godly wisdom and the fruit of the Holy Spirit.  My husband and I know first hand, we would have never made it raising our daughters without the Holy Spirit. From the toddler years, to the preteen years, to the teenage years and adulthood- there was no way we would have made it. The type of wisdom that comes from the Holy Spirit is not a carnal one. In-fact, I Corinthians 2: 12-13 says it very well on what the wisdom of God looks like, “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.”

Holy Spirit Grows In You

Just like a newborn baby grows through daily food, believers in Christ also grow in the influence and impact of the Holy Spirit. As you feed a newborn, he or she grows. Sometimes, it seems as if they grow in their sleep. We notice that the favorite three months old outfit is now too small at four months old. The process continues. In like manner, our daily pursuit in God’s Word, prayer and worship stimulates the growth of the Holy Spirit in a believer. His voice and instructions become more succinct as the Holy Spirit grows in us and we grow in Him. It’s a two way street.

What It Looks Like

This entry is underlined in my diary with caps- THANK YOU, LORD! This was an experience that made my husband and I appreciate the ministry of the Holy Spirit deeply. One of our daughters had the regular colic that babies have in the first three months of their arrival. With many sleepless nights, we decided it was time to take our daughter to the family pediatrician (who at that time was an elderly physician). To calm the baby with some much needed sleep, he went ahead and prescribed a colic medicine that should be taken twice a day (morning and evening). We got the medicine from our neighborhood pharmacy at that time. It was late afternoon, so we gave the first prescribed dose to our daughter (evening dose). Amazingly, daughter slept through the night. What a relief for us! The next day, we noticed she was still asleep and had not even eaten. Which was very unusual. She looked lethargic As I went to pray and study that morning, my Bible reading was from Proverbs 3. As I finished reading, there was a “leap” inside my spirit! Leaning in, the Holy Spirit spoke and said,”Do not give another dose of that medicine to your daughter” (He mentioned the name of said daughter). He continued and said, “the prescribed dose is three times more than what a baby with that body weight should have. Take her back to the doctor and show the medicine to the doctor and tell him, dosage was incorrect.” Well, that was a lot to take in at one time. I called my husband, who was at the office and filled him in. He came home in a flash and we took our daughter back to the doctor.

Thank God for the Holy Spirit

There was no way we could have known the prescribed dose was incorrect. The doctor apologized profusely. We then shared with him that it was the Holy Spirit that informed and guided us. If we had not followed the instructions of the Holy Spirit that morning, we could have given another overdose to the baby without knowing the repercussions. But thank God for the Holy Spirit! He guides! He instructs! He sheds light where we need His care. He is such a good God! The doctor later called and asked if we could tell him more about this Holy Spirit. What a door! My husband spent close to thirty minutes sharing the gospel with the Holy Spirit as the central theme. He did later visit the church we were attending at that time with us. This is what it looks like when the Holy Spirit leads us. Sometimes, it’s a leap in our spirit. Sometimes, it’s a nudge in our heart. Sometimes, it’s a check in our spirit. He chooses how He relates to us the heart and message God has for us-right at that moment. Parents, ask the Holy Spirit for His help- He wants to guide your parenting journey.
