Happy New Year Patheos Friends! It is still January and this is my first post of 2024 on this column (smiles). Each year presents us with life in all facets- highs, lows and in between for spiritual, social, personal, professional or physical. How we see the year contributes to how we show up and live out the year. Recently a friend texted me and asked that we consider the thought of a yearless God for all God has already planned for 2024. We began to pray along these lines on committing our lives afresh in 2024 to the yearless God.

The underlying thought is that Christ’s followers can rest fully on God’s Word each coming year. Is not like God has a list of things He will only do in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. You get the idea behind the thought of a yearless God. His plans continue no matter the year. We humans on the other hand organized time in a way that makes sense to us through the yearly calendar.

The concept of a yearless God denotes the greatness, faithfulness and bigness of God. A God we can stake our lives on. A God we can trust. A God we can go to anytime for anything. A God we can know intimately and love deeply. A God that is the source of power for all things life.Think about the kind of power this is about- God has power to give life. His breath is what runs within the human lungs.

And this power is available for our daily lives. For home, school, church, community, office, the list goes on. It is the kind of power that allows Christ followers to live a purposeful life that brings honor and glory to God.

This past week our area here in Texas had a power outage– electricity was out for about 35 minutes and it felt like hours! Closed out in the middle of a meeting, everything around me at that time was turned off. Come to find out there was a power outage in our area. In the few minutes of the power outage, the following had happened:

– No Telephone (landline)
– Traffic Lights chaos
– No Television
– No Internet
– No Microwave use
– No Oven use to bake
– No Refrigerator
– No Power for electric gates
– No lights to turn on                                                                                                                                                            – No Laundry

This is exactly what happens to a life that is not connected to the source of life and power. Nothing seems to work! However, the great news is that anyone and everyone has an open invitation to know this God of ultimate power. Accepting this perpetual invitation means surrendering control of one’s life to Him, acknowledging the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross and the benefit of Christ’s shed blood- it washes, cleanses and redeems.

Parents, let’s be intentional this year to teach our children this power source of life found only in the Creator of the Universe. And friends, let’s keep our gaze upon this loving God who already has this year in His great hands. Let’s all follow the yearless God!

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” – John 3:16
