The Pastor in the Public Square: An April 2014 T4G Course

The Pastor in the Public Square: An April 2014 T4G Course February 7, 2014

On April 7-10, 2014, I’ll be teaching the Together for the Gospel conference course entitled “The Pastor in the Public Square.” In addition to my lectures, I’m excited to announce three features of this really fun course! (Registration info below)

1) SBTS President Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. has agreed to give a special lecture on “The Theology of the Pastor in the Public Square” at 2:45pm-4pm on April 7, 2014. I’m thrilled to teach again with Dr. Mohler; we’ve taught together at both Boyce and the Seminary Wives Institute, so it will be exciting to co-teach with him at the MDiv level. (My own lectures will cover how Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Edwards, and others handled public square theology–this is red meat to me.)

2) We’ll have a SBTS faculty panel with gifted professors from a wide range of disciplines at 4:30pm on April 7, 2014. These include Dan DeWitt, Adam Greenway, Timothy Paul Jones, Denny Burk, Heath Lambert, and Mark Coppenger. We’ll have a fun, free-wheeling discussion on “The Peril and Promise of Being a Public Witness.”

3) At night I’ll moderate a potent pastors’ panel on “How Much Should Pastors Engage Public Square Issues?” with Ligon Duncan, Kevin DeYoung, Jim Hamilton, Greg Gilbert, and Ryan Fullerton. We’ll hash out just how much pastors talk about cultural trends and major issues in their sermons and ministries. I’m guessing there will be some (profitable) disagreement and lively conversation.

In addition, all students will attend the CBMW National Conference on “CBMW and the Gospel” (T4G pre-conference) on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 8:30-12pm. Only those students who register for the CBMW event will get $100 worth of new books. Students will then attend all of the T4G conference from Tuesday, April 8-Thursday, April 10, 2014.

I look forward to seeing some of you in this SBTS T4G course. Please note: you don’t need to be a current SBTS student (or to take future SBTS courses) to take this class. We’re going to have a blast in April 2014.
