There is a legend about a conversation that occurred between St. Columbanus and the Pope. The Pope had asked Columbanus to tell him where he hailed from. Columbanus’ reply? “I am an inhabitant of the worlds edge.” Celtic Theology was forged on the edge of society. It was grown in a land seen as the fringe of modern Roman society. The central Roman government, and sometimes the Roman church looked out to the edges of society and considered its cultures... Read more

Those who spoke these prayers understood prayer as transcendent of just words and necessary not for communication but survival. This week we celebrate Saint Patrick. Here in the United States, this usually means the nations bars will fill up with green clad twenty somethings that will drink the night into oblivion. Not for bringing Christianity to Ireland, but for saving early Irish culture from being erased by... Read more

In the light of the COVID-19 epidemic we are seeing some of the deepest darkest places in the church come to life. Things that we thought the church had stopped doing in the dark ages are being laid bare, and it is surprising, saddening and in some cases downright embarrassing. The biggest way it is showing up is Pastors, telling their people to ignore scientific and medical evidence and continue to go to church. When it comes to a church... Read more

What enters your mind when you think of Martyrdom? That may have a lot to do with how you grew up, the culture you were raised in or even the faith group you belong to. Many in the west view martyrdom in a very literal way. They view it in the slim view of death. Martyrdom is seen as giving up ones life for the faith. Now, it is true that when one dies for their faith, they are a... Read more

One constant that can be observed in western theology is the different views of scripture. There are those that take a literal and inerrant view, meaning the bible happened exactly how it was written and there is no error to be found in scripture. There are others on the other side that say the bible is a collection of mythologies that teach us about God, ourselves and the world around us. Then, in the middle is where many of us... Read more

I will be the first one to admit, that for most of my life I have been Pro-Capital Punishment. I did, and still believe that if a life is taken there should be requisite justice. Life is undoubtedly sacred and if a person takes the life of another person in cold blooded murder, I do still believe their livelihood is forfeit. But in later years I have begun to side against the death penalty, specifically in our criminal justice system.... Read more
