When I was a youth pastor, my church occasionally hosted an “ecumenical” worship service that moved around the Twin Cities in an attempt to unite Christians in worship.  (Truth be told, the monthly service was dominated by Pentecostals who danced, sang, and spoke in glossolalia.)  The Minnesota population of Messianic Jews is pretty darn small, and most of them came to this worship.  One Sunday night, when we hosted the worship, I brought the youth group and we sat in... Read more

Last summer, Marcus Goodyear interviewed me for The High Calling, an online magazine of Laity Lodge in Texas.  (In fact, I can remember exactly where I was: sitting next to Michael Toy‘s pool during a day off from the Church Basement Roadshow.)  Marcus posted Part One of the interview last week.  Money quote: At TheHighCalling.org, we often say that all work can be ministry. It can be hard for people to see how everyday work is ministry, though.  How about the... Read more

Adam Walker-Cleaveland’s posts have lessened in both frequency and profundity since he graduated from Princeton Seminary and entered the workaday world of church ministry.  But occasionally he drops a gem that reminds us of why Pomomusings charted the course for emergent movement blogs.  He posted on friendship in the internet world on Monday.  Money quote: Un-friending People Another interesting question is the idea of “un-friending” people on Facebook and other social networking sites. One of my friends from Columbia Seminary,... Read more

Thanks to David Crumm for the heads-up that most PBS stations will this weekend show Soul Searching: The Journey of Thomas Merton.  Today, Crumm interviews the filmmaker, Morgan Atkinson at Read the Spirit.  Money Q&A: DAVID: People talk about The Seven Storey Mountain as a runaway bestseller, but I don’t think people will get a good impression of its importance if they think about it as just a huge media success story. Merton’s success wasn’t like an actor becoming a... Read more

“Duh-sciple” has quickly become one of my favorite commenters.  under the post, Is Rick Warren a Centrist, s/he writes, Remember that when we draw the line between “us” and “them” between the “pure” and the “depraved” between the “saved” and the “damned” between “we, the good people” and “those people who are bad” Jesus is always on the other side of the line. Again, re-consider the cross. Read more

From Darin Peterson this morning: Call for visions and voices in our premier issue. DATE:  Spring 2009 (March) GENERAL THEME:  Resurrection Stories WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: At the core of all Christian belief is this bizarre, astonishing, and absurd claim:  That someone who was executed and killed came back to life three days later.  Most of the time it seems that church folks allow that belief to be a safe, abstract spiritual idea without really grappling with its claim on... Read more

Church of the Beloved is an Anglimergent church in North Seattle and a daughter church of Church of the Apostles.  They’ve produced a wonderful album called Hope for a Tree Cut Down, and it’s available for free on their website.  I’m not a fan of much Christian music (outside of Solomon’s Porch music), but I was immediately taken with this album.  I think it deserves a wide hearing.   Read more

Two in a row for Dr. Science! Wow, I just checked back to see if the old thread had died, and what do I find! Thank you, Tony. BTW, the pronoun used for me is “she”, not “he”. “A Walker” — Who cares if two is not equal to three? — The law. In law, there are about 1400 legal benefits to marriage, and the vast majority of those rights presume that the marriage is between two (2) persons only.... Read more
