Friday and Saturday of last week marked the inaugural event of JoPa Productions, a partnership between Doug Pagitt and me.  Doug and I are involved in the publishing industry both as authors and as editors/consultants/gadflies.  And just when it seems that traditional, dead tree publishing is in its denoument, we decided it’d be a good time to start a business in that industry! While we have great fondness for the many people we know who work the marketing departments of... Read more

To my post regarding Zach Lind’s support of SSM, over against the arguments Dan Kimball noted that it may lead to the legalization of polygamy, Dr. Science writes, Civil marriage is a legal contract between two persons. Same-sex marriage acknowledges that the two persons in a civil marriage are legally equal, and things that are equal to the same thing are equal to each other. SSM will not lead to legal polygamy because 2 is not equal to three. The... Read more

Many seem to think so, especially in light of works of compassion in Africa, but Andrew is not falling for it.  It seems that Rick went on Fox News and agreed with Sean Hannity that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should be assassinated.  Rick then went on to say, “The Bible says that evil cannot be negotiated with. It has to just be stopped…. In fact, that is the legitimate role of government. The Bible says that God puts government on... Read more

My editor extraordinaire at Jossey-Bass, Sheryl Fullerton, pointed me to a depressing post from Chip McGregor (a well-known literary agent) on the Black Friday (December 3) in the publishing industry. Some of the lowlights: Simon & Schuster cut 35 people (2% of its workforce). Thomas Nelson cut 54 people (10% of its workforce). Random House axed some of its top people and announced it is restructuring — and will disband the Doubleday Publishing Group. It has been reported that Houghton Mifflin... Read more

The conversation continues my most-read Beliefnet post to date: Same Sex Marriage Blogalogue: How I Went from There to Here.  Ben contributed this: Yes, The Holy Bible is very clear on a lot of things. Circumcision, for instance. And what about Leviticus 15? That’s pretty clear, I think. It’s always amazed me how so many of the rules of God can be dismissed by man, while others are so violently upheld. As a kid, when I asked my mom (as... Read more

On the eve of our Great Emergence National Event in Memphis comes news of a new denomination of breakaway Episcopal dioceses.  While this is no surprise, it is unfortunate, methinks.  It’s also a sign of the death of denominations, which I’ve been advocating for for a few years. I remember sitting in an Irish pub in Rome about 15 years ago, debating a Catholic priest about Protestantism vs. Catholicism.  His closing argument: “All you Protestants,” he said, “are children of... Read more

The next thing I hope tackle with Rod in our Same Sex Blogalogue is the “slippery slope,” which keeps coming up in the comments.  The argument usually goes like this: if we allow gay marriage, the next thing we know, people will be marrying their dogs. Dan Kimball blogged this same sentiment (substituting polygamy for dogs), and has since removed the post.  Regardless, Zach Lind has written a cogent defense of why the legalization of same sex marriage will not... Read more

As I wrote this summer on the Church Basement Roadshow, every place south of the Mason-Dixon line seems to think that they have the best BBQ.  IMHO, Kansas City and Memphis lead the pack (although Texas Brisket deserves a spot in the pantheon). Yesterday, upon arrival, Doug and I went straight to the world renowned Charles Vergo’s Rendezvous Charcoal Ribs in downtown Memphis.  The Rendezvous is known for dry-rubbed pork ribs, and they are fantastic.  In fact, we liked them... Read more

There’s a really fascinating string of comments under Tuesday’s post, Are You an MIE (Multi-Issue Evangelical)? regarding abortion.  It’s hard to pick just one comment, but RJohnson’s stood out to me as particularly thoughtful: “A fetus should not legally be considered a living person until it has brain activity.” Realize that there seems to be a confusion of terms here. As I see it, “personhood” is a legal status conferred by the laws of our nation. It was withheld from... Read more
