The past two books I’ve read have been memoirs. Though this isn’t a genre that I’m naturally drawn to, maybe I was because I’ve got a bit of memoir in my new book. Early reviews of TNC are positive, but people are noting that it tells the emergent story from one perspective. That’s right: from mine! I understand this is a slanted perspective, but it is “truthful,” insofar as I’ve done my best to tell the emergent story accurately —... Read more

A Franciscan Benediction: May God bless you with discomfort, at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart. May God bless you with anger, at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace. My God bless you with tears, to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and turn their... Read more

That’s how many meals were packaged by my kids and their schoolmates at Highlands Elementary School today.  Since 2003, Highlands has partnered with Kids Against Hunger to package high-protein, dehydrated meals to be sent to the world’s poorest countries.  This year, the food is being sent to Haiti.  The kids also raised over $7,000 to pay for the meals. It’s incredible that a public school engages in this kind of humanitarian work.  And the teachers make it clear to the... Read more

Karen Ward weighs in on the San Joachin Diocese’s departure from the Episcopal Church (USA) here. Money Quote: In so doing, let us also not waste time and missional energy being ‘against’ those who are more conservative, but instead direct our energy and resources towards the DOING of mission, reconciliation and service NOW. For this to happen we must not remain ‘hell-bent’ in upholding modernist rules and procedures that continue to shut out and choke off much of the new... Read more

On Sunday night, I journeyed by train to Belfast, Northern Ireland. I had a wonderful, home-cooked meal at the home of David Shepherd, principal of Belfast Bible College. On Monday morning I spoke to a crowded hall at Belfast Bible, ranging from students of the college to youth workers, to older women who stayed over from the women’s Bible study that directly preceded my lecture. Again, a fun and receptive crowd as I spoke about the forgotten art of spiritual... Read more

I arrived in Ireland with a really bad back, but in relatively good spirits. On the one hand, my back was so tweaked that I needed a wheelchair to get me between gates at Newark; on the other hand, I received a complimentary upgrade to Business First, so I was plied with good food and drink for the flight. Shane Tucker, my host for the week, picked me up at the airport in Dublin. Shane is an American who has... Read more

Well, I have to eat my words a bit, friends. I actually had a great time at AAR/SBL. It’s not because of the seminars attended and papers I heard presented — I did neither. But I had an absolutely great time meeting up with friends old and new. I saw several friends from Fuller days, as well as various folks who are interested in things emergent. There was a really good breakfast meeting on Saturday at which several of us... Read more
