The Friend

Would you be surprised to know that the first face of fear is friendship? I’m not talking about manipulation. I really think that fear is good, at least at first.

The Bible says that fear is the beginning of wisdom. The beginning.

It is fear that keeps me from sneaking out of my parents’ house or jumping into the raging rapids of the Nile. It reminds us of our mortality; we are not the gods of our universe. It makes me aware of boundaries and it keeps me safe.

Our instinct for fear keeps us alive. It keeps us from kicking tigers and leaning out of skyscraper windows.

Fear begins as a friend, a stiff-arm that shows us where danger begins and where my invincibility fades.
